I'd keep it. It's not much calories and the thickness helps. We use pre-thickened formula with bm and then do solids later.

@LuLu Mom: I didn't even think of that!

@mamamoose: he gets three bottles so 3 tbsp/day. I think taking him down to two would be managable.

@mslipgloss: his is thankfully not bad enough to require medicine. While he does spit up a lot, he isn't in pain so his Dr told me to try the cereal. I'm hoping that starting solids will help with it.

@Mrs. Polish: My LO had horrible reflux (she eventually had to have surgery), so my recommendation would be to see a Ped GI specialist. If I had sought a specialist sooner, my LO would have slept better not to mention that her quality of life would have been significantly improved. Specialists may also give you access to better meds, like Prevacid and Prilosec (my Ped would only prescribe Zantac which never made a dent in my LO's reflux), which could eliminate the need for adding cereal entirely.

@Mrs. Polish: How many bottles is he getting a day? I'm guessing 6? 6 tablespoons of cereal plus adding solids does seem like a lot to me. I somtimes mix cereal into my LO's purees to get the extra iron into her but no more than 2 TBs a day. If I were you I would probably try to gradually cut down on the cereal in each bottle as you add solids into the routine. Adding solids should help with the spit up so you likely will find you don't need as much cereal any how.

We were told the same thing, I started putting the cereal mixed in with the solids instead of the bottle.

@edelweiss: I might call before I start purees just to get their input. His dr was very hands off when he said we could start. Basically, no advice. Just "go for it".

i don't have experience with this, but i would probably keep the cereal/bottle combo if it's been working, even when i add purees to the diet. i'm hesitant to mess with things. although do you want to check with your pediatrician to see if s/he recommends trying the bottle without the cereal and seeing if isaiah can still keep it down?

We're getting ready to start purees. Isaiah gets 1tbsp of oatmeal cereal in each bottle per his doctors recommendation. When we start solids do I keep putting the cereal in his bottle or stop doing it? I don't want to overfeed him, and that seems like a lot.
