@caffeinated: my lo went 12 days without pooping! I stuck the tip of my pinki in her butt and she pooped the longest, thickest, hardest poop! I took a pic and posted it a loooooong time ago.

After this constipation nightmare I started giving my Lo happy baby pear pouches. And made sure she was hydrated. She hasn't been constipated since and goes 3x a day on average. Sometimes more!

Yay, the constipation spell is over! Thank goodness it happened before she went to bed.

@MamaBehr: LO is breast-fed, though my ped said something interesting about how i should bf her after giving solids, as it would help with the constipation.

@Rubies: Yep, we have PC! Is there a difference between that and regular juice? I got pear nectar juice from this local organic store, and chose the one that had the least amount of sugar (23g for 1 cup).

@Mrsbells: i grate fresh pears and i find that LO takes it better than cooked pears. LO gagged every time i tried to give her the cooked ones!

@caffeinated DS is old enough to get two meals a day, so we use one for prunes and one for something else. Is your LO BF or FF? I also noticed an increase in constipation if I was putting too much formula in the bottle. If I were you I would try prune juice, just not too much and I would water it down a little.

@mrbee that is something I'm worried about, that this is going to translate into constipation issues as a toddler. I will definitely be reading tomorrow's post.

My daughter experienced (and still is actually) the same thing with solids and constipation. She had a few hard and painful BMs and ever since has been trying to hold her poops in. It's a vicious cycle because the more she holds it in, the more painful it is for her when it finally comes out. We've given her pears, prunes, peaches, sweet potatoes, juices and even miralax for a while. Nothing was really helping her. I still had to help her through every poop session because her instinct now is to hold it in. What's working for her now are kiwis. She didn't have a taste for them when she was younger but now she likes them. She has one every day along with her diluted prune juice. Sweet potatoes is always a regular item in her diet. I try to give her a lot of liquids. She's already 15 months now and it's only in the last couple weeks that I'm seeing progress. Hopefully, your LO will not develop bad habits like my daughter. My son used to have constipation here and there too but was always fixed with pureed pears.

@caffeinated: Our biggest ones were rice (including mum mums, cereal, etc) and bananas. The other thing I thought of is that we had issues when he was eating too many solids compared to milk. If you are open to BLW that helps them portion control and they won't eat more solids than their body can handle.

@caffeinated: Yah diet and fluids is probably the best way to start... but if that doesn't work, then I would definitely consider laxatives (in consultation with your pediatrician).

Our biggest problem with Charlie's constipation these days is actually milk! He just loves it so, but it constipates the heck out of him.

@mrbee: I've been obsessed with her poops since her jaundice issues when she was 1 week old. Since LO is only 6.5 months old, i'm reluctant to give her laxatives unless her constipation keeps happening. I'm really careful with what i give her...so far it's been high-fibre fruits and veggies, though i hear that bananas and carrots cause constipation. In an ideal world, i'd only give her pears and yams every day!

@Baby Boy Mom: I've only given her foods on the "great introductory foods" list. Are there any foods in particular that backed up your LO?

For us, I just monitored what foods were giving him constipation and then avoided those until he was a little older. (Sure enough with a more mature digestive system he could handle them- often it was just a matter or waiting a month or two). Also, we've found yogurt really good for regularity.

@caffeinated: Those balls sound like the driest form of stool... type 1 on the Bristol stool scale:

I just interviewed an expert in childhood constipation, and the first post about it should go up tomorrow I think. But what I've learned is: take this stuff seriously! I would talk to your pediatrician about Miralax, and look closely at your LO's diet!
