If she is taking so long to eat, just have her eat less. Solids are not "required" at all--just do enough that it is fun for both of you!
I know when I was a baby I was EBF till 10 months and I swear I turned out ok!

(And my 3 month old is not eating solids yet, so I don't have any advice other than to not worry.)

*My dad always tells me "worry is interest paid on a debt you may not owe."

Haha! It does get better. My LO (7months) likes to take a spoonful of food and then immediately stuff her bib into her mouth. Also, any little drops that land on her try are immediately mashed everywhere.

I suggest you maybe invest in a dog to help with cleanup ;) Ours has a diet incredibly rich in fruits, veggies and cheerios!

Maybe she's just not into solids yet? DS caught on literally right away (he cried the first night because he wanted more!), but it took DD a while before she really "got" how to eat. It took probably 2 months of her just kinda pushing food around her mouth before she actually understood and seemed eager to eat solids.

I also feed DS at dinner time, and then we go straight upstairs for his bath.

It can be tough but finger foods were messier for us. Once she started picking food up herself, it could be flung anywhere...the floor...walls...on me. Strip her down to a diaper as other people have said. It will get easier but it takes a lot of practice.

It does get better. We did resort to feeding in just a diaper. Bibs actually made her more messy. It also sounds like maybe your LO may still have a bit of tongue reflex and pushing out a lot of food? Keep up the practice but in a few weeks that should get better and they actually eat the food instead of pushing it out and making a mess.

Awww... It does get better. Maybe you can try feeding her with just a diaper on. That way you can just wipe her down. I bought a pack of plain cotton white towels just to clean my son during meals. It was so much better than napkins or paper towels.

I was looking forward to solids with DS but it took so long to feed him until I started him on a different baby food that he loved. It's organic and I think the name is Sprout (it's created by the food network's Tyler Florence). Anyway, it got a lot easier and faster until we got to real food like toast, yogurt, cereal then it took awhile again!

@MungBean: When we started solids we only did once a day in the evening, usually while we ate dinner so she felt included. We only did a bath a few times a day. It sounds like you are doing kind of a lot of food for right at the beginning...a few tbsp is probably enough?

Our LO is now 8 1/2 mos and is getting somewhat neater so take heart! We are also moving out of the puree stages and into more table food, so it is messy in a different way.

Are you giving her small spoonfuls? Hahah
Solids are a pain in the booty, but it gets easier eventually.
If your Lo keeps spitting it out and it gets all over the place, I wouldnt force it.
Breastmilk/formula is nutrition enough until your lo turns 1!

In the early days of solids my Lo didn't eat much at all.. A good meal was if she ate one ounce of food!
She's a great eater now .. Finally!

LO is six-months-old and we're doing at least one solid "meal" a day. Up until about a week ago, I've been giving her a few tastes here and there of rice cereal and fruit/veggie purees, but now I'm feeding her solids daily and it's exhausting! First of all, LO gets SO messy. It doesn't matter what it is -- cereal, fruits, veggies (peas are the worst) -- she is an absolute mess afterwards. At first I thought it was adorable but now I'm dreading the clean-up! Second, it takes sooo long to get her to eat even 1/2 an ounce. Tonight it took an hour for her to finish 4 TB of oatmeal and 3/4 oz of strained peas. It kinda reminded me of the early newborn days and how I would spend hours and hours nursing her...

I don't get how this works. If I feed her in the AM, she gets so messy that she needs a bath, so I've been trying to feed her closer to the evening. Any tips to keep her cleaner? I use a bib, but somehow food ends up everywhere, even on her toes! Amazing. Also, will it start taking less time to feed her? Since it takes so long now, I feel like all she does all night is sit in the high chair :T
