@PurplePeony: Oh, I wasn't laid back! I was neurotic and found the whole solids thing totally stressful, haha! But Xander was very clear about his timeline and was clearly on his own schedule that didn't correspond with other kids, so I had to adapt! :D

@Foodnerd81: @mrs.shinerbock: @My Only Sunshine: no history of food allergies, so I think I won't worry so much about foods that are similar to things she's already tried and are not usually very allergenic.

@Pirouette: you're so right, it's not a race. I really need to remember that. We had a couple weeks where DD was sick and on antibiotics, so we didn't do any new foods with her then, and ever since I've felt like we're lagging. But really, she seems happy and she's a little chunkster so I know she's not going hungry -- I think I just need to breathe and not compare so much. It's hard, though!

@skibobrown: we just started to let her play with a sippy -- she thinks it's hilarious but hasn't really gotten the hang of getting the liquid out of it yet. I'm trying to find a non-plastic straw cup with good reviews so I can see if she prefers that.

Thanks for the detailed replies, everyone!

@Smurfette: yeah, I think I will start sending breakfast for her. She's usually the last baby to get to daycare (she's just waking up around the time most of them get there!) so they might grumble a little about the timing, but oh well.

@locavore_mama: we do have lots of frozen cubes of various purees, but the problem with feeding her at nighttime is that she spits her solids up in her crib. She has this compulsion to practice new skills like crawling when she's supposed to be falling asleep, and I think they're too heavy in her tummy while she does that. We need at least 1.5 hours between food and bed for her to digest, and we just don't have that by the time we get home. :(

Also @locavore_mama: @Smurfette: thanks for the info on meats. I didn't think it was quite time yet but I wasn't sure!

@Mrs. Confetti: thank you for the link! I'll definitely check it out.

@Adira: that timeline sounds good -- DD likes food so we have been doing at least one meal per day since 6 months, so I think I'd like to have her on two meals most days around 8 months and three between 10 and 11 months. I think I'll try to adopt your laid-back approach!

Daycare really helped us out on this, since they would feed DD some solids during the day. From my recollection, up until 1 year we typically managed 2 meals of solids per day, and it was a good day when we got all 3 meals in. It worked out fine. At one year we stopped doing bottles and only gave milk in a sippy, which was when I really started feeding full meals 3x per day.

We really didn't start doing 3 consistent meals a day until she was eating finger foods, which was at about 9 months. Before that, it was much more random depending on the time we had. Our daycare gives her breakfast, lunch, and a snack. Having them give her breakfast really helps our mornings! If she's awake when we're eating breakfast, I'll put her in her high chair and give her a sippy cup and some Cheerios.

As far as how long to wait to introduce foods, after the first week or two we got very lax. Like some of the other ladies, we have no family history of food allergies. For commonly allergenic foods like strawberries and eggs, we made a note on our calendars the first time she tried them just in case she had a reaction.

we're in the same boat, so don't worry, you are not alone! we were giving her just oatmeal and fruit and veggies (purees) and only once a day but after a rough week, we stopped all solids and now she's barely eating any at all. i feel so behind!

I basically spoke your entire post to DH last night and he said "food before one is just for fun, and breastmilk should be her main source of nutrition for the first year, so she'll get what she gets. and babies in some other countries don't get ANY solids for probably the first two years, and they are just fine - maybe even better off than babies in the US." and he's right. i feel like i hear about babies her age getting so much more and i feel behind somehow, but it's not a race. Also, DH is not on board with BLW at all so we're sticking with purees for a while (when we even get those going again!)

soo...just saying. you're not failing at all! and neither am I :)

Will your daycare feed breakfast or a morning snack? My LO is 8.5 months, and we just went to 3 meals (most days) She gets breakfast around 8 and lunch around 1 with the nanny and I feed her dinner around 6 while I do dishes for the day. She was not super excited about food until we started with some things she could hold herself, like steamed broccoli florets.

Around 7 months, we started giving her little pieces of things from our plates, including meats. At first, i tried to limit it to 1-2 new items every few days in case of a reaction. We also started mixing things and adding spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, cumin, etc.) around the same time. I think if you have not had any reactions and there is no family history, then I would go ahead and start mixing things that your LO has already had.

We tried eggs around 8 months, but LO doesn't like them, so she didn't eat much. Our ped said anything but honey is OK, but I plan on waiting until 9 mo to try peanuts.

I never worried too too much about introducing new foods. We had no history of food allergies and our ped was pretty laid back about it, so I just kind of noted when I have her something new. With potential allergens I watched carefully (like first time she had peanut butter or eggs) but otherwise I was pretty laid back. I made a point for her to at least get a taste of eggs and dairy sort of early on (like 7-8 months I think) so I could feel safe adding them to other things like pancakes.

You can start introducing meats around 9m because their iron store from the womb start depleting around then.

As for the meals; with us we both WOH full time so most days all we have time for is dinner. When bedtime was still early I made made dinner for her and froze in ounce portions. That way when we get home it's just a matter of heating it up for her. It'll take a bit but I'm sure you'll get into the groove on.

And if one day we were running late and we missed dinner I didn't sweat it. I think at the beginning her one meal a day was dinner then we added a meal (can't remember if it was breakfast or lunch) at daycare. Then daycare let us know when she seemed like she wanted more then we amped up to 3 meals a day.

I didn't introduce eggs till after a year simply because my nephew is severely allergic.

I started with purees around a week shy of 6m. Then I started making the purees chunkier. By 7 months we started with some BLW

Can you have day care give breakfast? That is where my LO got breakfast. I would feed her a bottle at home and then a couple hours later she had breakfast. I would feed her as soon as we got home from day care. Then an hour or so late she got a bottle before bed. Maybe don't give LO a lot for dinner, just a little, so you can experiment with foods.

I think it was 9 months before we tried egg when she was starting to go to all table foods and not purees. I did puree meats a month after she started them. The Gerber 2nd level foods. Table food meat was around 9 months. Kielbasa, turkey sausage, and turkey deli meat where the only ones she would really eat.

Seriously, thank you for posting! We haven't started yet (LO's 5.5 months) and I'm overwhelmed. Can I just let him BF FOREVER? I really don't get it at all and have the same questions as you do in terms of when to start combining foods together, introduce meat, etc.

Xander didn't even seem that interested in solids until around 7 months, and we added one meal a month, so we weren't at 3 meals until closer to 10/11 months. We had the same issues in the beginning - it was hard to find the time to squeeze in meals and I wanted his liquids (breast milk for us) to be the priority.

We ended up having daycare feed him both breakfast and lunch, and by the time we wanted to introduce dinner, he was finally able to stay up later after daycare in the evening so we could do it. Probably by the time we introduced dinner at 10/11 months was when I stopped worrying about only doing one thing at a time. I just kept track of everything he ate in case there was a reaction. We introduced meats around one year because I knew he needed to get more protein since he wouldn't be drinking cow's milk (he's allergic).

We were kind of laid back about BLW and every time we offered anything that wasn't a puree, Xander wasn't interested. It wasn't until 16 months that he actually started getting into finger foods, and I followed the lead of daycare which would offer him finger foods (what they served the other kids his age) first before giving him his normal purees.

DD is 7.5 months old and I feel like we're sort of floundering with solids. We're doing mainly purees, although I'd like to combine that with some BLW but I haven't quite gotten the hang of how. We've tried a variety of fruits and veggies, along with oatmeal cereal, and she likes most of it. But I'm just feeling clueless about how to move forward.

First, when do you start combining foods and worrying less about introducing things one at a time? I'd like to mash up some of our food for her when we have simple stuff, but there are so many things she hasn't tried yet. Also, when did you try meats? Egg yolks?

The other thing I can't figure out is how to get more than one meal into her. We occasionally have time to do either breakfast or dinner but most days, we're rushing to get out the door and she's starting to get tired by the time we get home from work/daycare. She's hard to feed when she's tired, plus she likes to practice crawling in her crib and will spit up whatever she ate if there's not enough time for her to digest. I know we need to start giving her more than just lunch at daycare, but there just doesn't seem to be time...I guess I should ask them to give her a late-afternoon snack or something?

Our pediatrician's office is pretty laid back about feeding and basically just says to increase the number of foods and amount slowly as LO seems to want it, but nothing more specific. And I know that food before one is mostly for fun, but she does seem to want it (she's happy with milk but obviously enjoys her purees...except peas).

Sorry this is so long...I just feel like we're failing at this, especially when I read about what other people's babies who are a similar age are eating. Tips? Advice? Please?
