I am dreading the whole lunch prep thing, because I can't stomach looking at food in the morning! Whatever we do will have to be made at dinner.

I plan to offer a lot of variety with the full expectation that it might not get touched and what he will like on Monday, will be totally gross and he won't even look at it on Tuesday. I don't plan to do the bentos with the scenes, but will probably use a Bento style lunch box with compartments...there's something about the compartments that seem to appeal to toddlers, like they have some control over their consumption, which is what a lot of food issues center around.

I started packing bentos too after reading mrs bee's lunch packing post. I used to just do leftover pasta, rice or whatever we had the night before or a pb&j sandwich. Sometimes I'll add fruit on the side. He'd come back sometimes with his lunch untouched. After I started bentoing, he started eating better. This week, he's finished all the lunches I packed. I think he likes the different categories of food that's in his lunch now. Just a few bites of each thing keeps his interest better. And it's surprisingly easy to put together in the mornings.

It's so funny b/c I found that post so intimidating but bookmarked it b/c my son (who's 2.5) was starting a new school/daycare where I would need to pack a lunch. It's only been three weeks, but so far, it has been so much easier than I expected. The bentos are so small, but when packed are actually a lot of food. I usually just include two items from the previous night's dinner, and any combination of pretzels, graham crackers, veggie (usually frozen peas or broccoli that thaw by lunchtime), etc. If we ate crap for dinner, than I toss in an egg (there's a fun way to cook it like a very thin omelette and roll it and slice it) and maybe some breakfast sausage.

LO is 6 months old and we just started solids. I try to give her different things each time (cereal, fruit, veggie) but she's been a little consipated so I've been giving her a lot of pear. I'm thinking that I will do my absolute best to give her a variety of foods.

My daycare provides a meal plan at +1 year. But before that, I did the same variety as Mrs. Bee but mine were not nearly as pretty! My LO mostly likes to eat so I haven't had to make everything so cute like Mrs. Bee but the same variety is still there. I think once you get your system going it isn't too bad but I still get stressed out thinking that I HAVE to always have food available for the LO.

I usually give LO 3 different things/meal. She's only 10 months old though..
Not sure what I'm going to do when she gets older, but will definitely try to give her something from every food group!

A while back, Mrs Bee wrote a blog post that included some Bento boxes she had packed for Charlie for daycare. I was amazed at the diversity of food in his meal! Fruit, veggies, starch, dairy and protein. My question is, does everyone provide such a fantastic lunch for their child? It looks like it would take a lot of planning and a lot of time.

What does your lo eat for lunch?
