Oh I feel better knowing DS isn't the only one who doesn't seem to care about food. I was worried because it seems like his appetite for solids decreased after the first 6 weeks or so, but it's also when his teething kicked into overdrive, so maybe it's just to be expected.

I guess I just won't worry about weaning him off formula and onto cows milk at a year, and will wait until his interest in food picks up and his diet balances out. I wish I was still breastfeeding - I hate forking over the $$ for formula.

We have tried chunkier purees, and he does seem to like the pouches and eats directly from them. I told DH yesterday I wish I could put all of our jarred food we already have into pouches, since he eats better from them than from a spoon. I hate that they are 40-50 cents more for the same amount of food! We'll keep offering and see where it goes.

When you feed purees are you using some of the chunkier purees (stage 3)? That has helped us as well as giving my son a regular spoon to hold and bang on his tray keeps him much happier with being fed instead of getting to do it himself. I try to do finger foods but if he isn't interested in what is offered then we supplement with the stage 3 purees. During teething he doesn't like eating things he has to gum too much since it can be painful so we always offer and let him make the decision. Some meals he eats great and others he barely touches the food.

@mrstilly: My LO is just about the same age and is the same way with food. Last night I was excited he ate 4oz of food in one sitting because that's a lot for him. I was starting to think that he is just addicted to boob, but it's always nice to hear that he isn't the only one who doesn't show a ton of interest in food. :)

My LO is a bit younger, 8-1/2 months, and she varies a lot - from maybe an ounce to 5 or so ounces a day. We offer them with breakfast and dinner and usually a snack sometime during the day once or twice. Sometimes she eats a lot and other times she just has a few bites and isn't interested anymore. We don't force the issue with solids, she's gradually started eating more so we're still going off of her cues. We have started giving her small bites of what we're having if it's not too spicy or hard to chew (no teeth yet).

In terms of what we feed LO, the only things currently off-limits are honey and milk. (And stuff like candy and soda and cheetos, etc., but you know what I mean).
We seem to do well with the whole "feed LO whatever you're eating." Obviously, that doesn't happen for lunch and snack while he's at daycare, but he definitely seems more interested in food if it seems like he's getting ours or sharing with us.

We haven't started solids yet, but a friend got us the book "Cooking for Baby" and I'm so excited to try the recipes:

http://www.amazon.com/Cooking-Baby-Wholesome-Homemade-Delicious/dp/1416599185/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1328892927&sr=1-3

It also seems to have good info about what foods and when, although I have only glanced through it so far.

It sounds like it may not matter as much for your LO, but ours seems to have a definite preference for feeding himself, so we try to do as much finger food as possible. Also, I've noticed that sometimes if I put less enticing items in front of him and then sit around and watch him, he'll fuss and try to get out or play with his food, whereas if I leave him in his high chair while I ignore him and do other stuff around the kitchen or living room, often times he actually will start to eat the food. He'll do it kind of slowly- he'll kind of pick it up and play with it and occasionally put a piece in his mouth and eat it- but it keeps him occupied while I do other chores, and he eats more that way than if I sat there, let him fuss, and then took him out of the chair. And while we try to encourage eating in his high chair, he actually tends to eat a lot when we're out and kind of sharing food with him while we hold him. (For example, we do weekly dinners with five other families, and there's no "sitting down at the dinner table"- it's all kind of standing and sitting around and helping feed whatever child is hanging on to you at that moment, and if I'm standing around picking at my own dinner and alternating between taking a bite myself and giving him a bite, he'll seriously eat half my food).

My LO is 10 months old- here's what his menu is today:
Breakfast at 7 AM:
- Probably 3/4 cup of a yogurt/tofu/strawberry shake (which I spoon-feed him)
- one whole grain waffle (which I rip up and he then feeds to himself)
- A handful of raisins

Lunch (at 11 AM). (size-wise, we pack each of these in small containers that probably hold about 1/2 - 3/4 cup of food. or thereabouts)
- Meatballs (cut up, and he feeds them to himself)
- Whole wheat pita bread (in pieces, feeds them to himself)
- Pea and white bean chunky puree (spoon-fed by teacher)

Snack (same containers as lunch, to give you an idea of quantity). Around 2 PM
- Cottage cheese (spoon-fed by daycare teacher)
- Apple pieces (feeds to himself)

Dinner (around 6:30 PM)
- Mum mums or puffs while we get dinner prepped
- 1/2 cup of minestrone soup (spoon fed)
- 1 banana (feeds to himself)

I'm giving this as kind of an example "average" day, but in reality it varies a ton. Some days he'll eat half a waffle for breakfast and not want anything more. Some days he'll eat half a grapefruit, ten olives, a yogurt, and half a cup of chicken breast.

On the other hand, we (and our pediatrician) have always been suprised by how little milk or formula LO drinks during the day. He has always consumed far fewer liquid calories than "the internet" says he should, but since his weight is great and he's getting a balanced diet (more or less) through solids, none of us worry about it.

Up until 12 months, your LO gets all the nutrition s/he needs from breast milk and/or formula!
My LO is 10 months old too and BARELY eats anything. She has 3 meals a day but takes 5-10 bites total. I give her yogurt and pieces of food.. rice, chicken, carrots, etc. The only puree she gets is Happy Baby Pears. It keeps her regular. :)
She's thriving and in the 90th% for height so not too concerned!

Just keep giving your LO 3 meals a day and snacks in between. He'll start eating one of these days!

DS is just over 10 months old. We started purees at 6 months. He initially gobbled them up, but then started teething, and hasn't stopped yet - 8 teeth in 2.5 months, and has been touch and go for a while. He usually eats well at daycare. Purees or whatever the other kids eat mashed or cut up. At home for dinner he doesn't each much at all. He eats puffs and cheerios a lot throughout the morning and evening though. He is kind of picky, hates his high chair for more than 5 minutes, and feeding him in other places doesn't work much better. He has tried a few new things - ground beef, chicken, bread, egg, potatoes, pasta noodles, cut/steamed veggies - and can feed the pieces to himself, but only eats maybe 10 tiny bites when feeds himself pieces while we are at home. After 2-4 ounces of puree he starts refusing and screeching to get out.

At 10 months, how much was your LO eating? Was your LO eating purees still or small pieces to feed themselves? Did they eat a lot less while teething? Was there a point when they started eating a lot more? When were they eating enough to start weaning them off of formula?

I feel like the rate we are going he's going to be a picky eater who is on formula forever because he won't eat enough solids to get enough nutrition!
