@Mrs. Blue: Yeah, when I DO send solids to daycare, I'm going to try to be really specific about when/how/how much! Like I want them to do it one hour after a bottle and to only offer so much and not try to pressure him to eat it! And I agree - not being able to be there to do this stuff with them SUCKS. :(

@Adira: We're in the same shoes. Evening is the only time we're home during the week, and they're usually too tired to really be cooperative or into it at all. I think we're going to have to start sending some to daycare, but I'm not going to send any new foods. I"ll save those to try during the weekend. I hate, hate, hate not being there to do this kind of stuff though. :(

ETA: I'm going to specifically tell them that they do not have to eat a certain amount and not to push it.

@locavore_mama: Supposedly he went down for naps just fine yesterday, but I suspect they just aren't putting him down for naps as often as I'd like!

@locavore_mama: Good point! It's also my fear that they might try to push it more and pressure him to eat it even if he's not really into it! And I agree, he definitely doesn't NEED it. I think I might follow your suggestion and just try it more at home until he's eating more consistently and then start sending to daycare. I just wish he would nap better at daycare so we could do dinner more often with him!

@Adira: the other thing is they are so convinced he needs more food. Would they try to force it and make him reject it more. KWIM? Some people like to "push the spoon" so to speak.
Honestly I would keep trying when possible and on the weekends. When he's solidly eating it 1x a day with YOU then I would start.
I just can't imagine at 6.5 m he needs the solid!

@locavore_mama: haha, I don't blame you!!!!! Apparently he was FINE yesterday (and even didn't finish one of his bottles AND went more than 3 hours after that before he wanted the next bottle), so I know he doesn't really need more food! I just don't want him to be miserable there and if eating more is comforting to him... haha, I don't know! But I agree... some of these teachers at my daycare are SKETCHY!

@Adira: that is exactly why I would not send it. I feel like your daycare has consistently pushed for solids. I feel like they might push for it even more when you start sending it. They might tell you he needs it 2x a day instead of 1x. Which might cause him to drink less breast milk. LOL I don't trust your daycare!

@Revel: Oooh, good point!

@Smurfette: Yeah, the couple times this weekend he had solids and seemed into it (or at least not against it), it was in the afternoon. I have yet to have a successful attempt at night!

@locavore_mama: I was thinking about waiting until we were doing it more consistently at home because I don't think he NEEDS the extra food, but I have had issues with him being extra fussy at daycare and they think he's hungry, so maybe having solids would help with that?

We did not send solids into daycare until she was on a solid 1x a day for a while. And we never sent food she has not tried yet to daycare.

For now I still wouldn't send solids to daycare bc it seems like he's not really missing it anyway.

@Adira: I would start sending them. He might do better in the afternoon and then in a couple weeks you can try again at night. Some days R just gets at day care. It is nice now too. When we go out to lunch on the weekends, we feed her while we wait and she loves it.

No experience with solids because we are not there yet, and this is sort of off topic, but I've read, I think on kellymom, that when you EBF it's a good idea to have daytime caregivers give solids if you work because it can reduce the amount of pumped milk you have to provide. Something I've filed away for a few months from now.

Sounds like introducing new foods on the weekends is the way to go! Thanks ladies!!!

But you ladies DO think I should send the solids to daycare, right? Since Xander often doesn't nap well to give us time to do solids in the evening?

@Adira: our daycare asks that you not send new foods there, in case kids have a reaction. But once I knew he was eating food somewhat, I started sending some to daycare for lunch. Then after a month or so I started sending breakfast too.

We tried to do the just weekend thing and it worked ok for a bit but then she got hungry and we had to let daycare lead. Plus we have found in general she's not as hungry at night. So even if you had time he may be less interested at night then in the morning. Maybe introduce a new food Saturday and Sunday (mid day) and if it goes well send it during the week. That way they aren't introducing anything new but he gets more practice.

So as many of you know, Xander FINALLY accepting some solids this past weekend, but since then, I haven't really had an opportunity to feed him anymore because he tends to REFUSE to take his third nap at daycare and ends up sleeping in the car or when he gets home, which pushes our last nursing session back and then there's not enough time to have dinner before bed. So... I'm wondering... should I just send solids with him to daycare and let them pretty much do everything with him? I kind of wanted to be the one introducing new foods to him and stuff, but if we can never have dinner together in the evening, the only time I have to feed him is on the weekend, and I probably shouldn't limit his solid intake to just weekends, right?

What did you do? And what would you do in my position? Xander's 6.5 months.
