@edelweiss: We've never held back on spices but cut out all added salt and sugar

@tinyperson: I know one of my nieces really struggled with eating & weight gain - they ended up seeing an occupational therapist to work on chewing, etc. So that is a thought? It has helped me to think of it loosely as a meal = 1 protein / 2 veg /1 fruit /1 grain roughly. I don't follow it strictly but it helps. If you're trying to maximize calories butter/olive oil/hummus might be good things to try? It was really like something just clicked one day for my LO and he was all about the eating, before he was just playing and tasting and I only offered once a day. It also helped when I was eating with him- he mimicked me chewing and of course wanted some of what I was having.

Could you maybe just try offering your LO food off your own plate? I gave up on savoury purées as Miss A just wouldn't eat them (and I'm lazy!) but she will eat oatmeal with fruit for breakfast and puréed fruit at other meals! Most of the time LO self feeds but sometimes I place small pieces of food into her mouth.

I'm also a big fan of family mealtimes where time and schedule allows, babies learn by example and it's also great bonding time! (And again, I'm lazy and eating together saves me making separate food!)

@MamaMoose: same here! we had mostly been giving her purees and our Ped said she should be eating mostly table food now, which stressed me out to no end. i worry about choking, about how much is actually going in her mouth from feeding herself, if she is still hungry, etc.

LOL!! I feel the same way :) I am SO lazy and pouches are my BFF. My ped did say to start giving him water in a sippy at 6 months with meal time. It's definitely been hit or miss.

i have no idea what i'm doing when it comes to solids. LO is 7 months--he's getting two servings of purees mixed with oatmeal cereal at daycare, but i "decided" to do that mostly because that was his daycare's routine with the other babies. in the mornings and evenings he gets finger foods (doesn't really ingest anything). now that i'm in this spot, i have no idea how to move to the next step. at what point is he supposed to have real "meals"? snacks? water? when can he eat what we're eating? do i have to use less salt/sugar/spice?

can i just feed him pouch purees forever?

My allllmost 12 month old has a pincer grab like a champ (puffs stand no chance against her), but will.not.eat! anything else whole (other than puffs). The two times I have given her avocado she almost choked on it, she had a skin reaction to scrambled egg, and everything else, i.e., bananas, blueberries, yogurt, etc., she will move around her tray and mush in her hands but won't eat it. I am both frustrated and terrified (about choking). She also has no teeth. I know they can gum things, yadda, yadda, yadda, but still. She has no teeth . . . it's an issue in my mind.

She is supposed to start daycare soon (in the next month or two), and she is supposed to be eating table food at that time. I have NO IDEA how that is going to happen!

Even though they dont have teeth they can pretty much eat everything if it is well cooked and soft enough. My 16 month old has no back teeth but is able to chew everything. At that age they are allowed to have cheese and yogurt but arent supposed to have milk til they are 12 months. They should maintain the same amount of formula/breastmilk as before starting solids

Yes. DS is 8 month and is getting a little of purees. I haven't done the research yet to know what to give him other than fresh fruit & steamed veggies. Can he have cheese? Meat? And how much milk should he be drinking now that he is eating solids? Also, if he only has 2 teeth, won't it be hard for him to chew stuff? Ugh, so overwhelming! I totally wish there was an E-Meals for babies :)

@Mrsbells: I know, but we're meeting with an endocrinologist due to poor growth, and she wants her on 3 meals a day. We're meeting with her again in a few weeks and she wants to know how much we're giving her and what she's eating. That's part of the stress. When we met with her at 8 months, she was surprised she wasn't having 3 meals a day. Thankfully she's still nursing the same amount, and I always nurse her before she gets solids, so that's the focus.

@tinyperson: At 9 months the solids she is eating arent really for her growth and nutrition but more for learning how to eat solids. At this age her main diet should still be either formula or breastmilk. I would remind myself of this whenever I got stressed out. "Food under one is just for fun"

Keep practicing with the finger foods- by 9 months we had pincer grip down but it can take awhile. We did spiral pasta noodles, shredded chicken, small piece of salmon, avocado to practice. It can be stressful but try to not worry! You've never seen an adult not know how to feed themself, right? :) try to have her eat at the same time as you so that she can watch and imitate. And playing is ok for now- they should be still getting the majority of their calories through breastmilk or formula right now anyway.
And who cares what the other over achieving mommies are doing? You just work with your LO and she will get it, at her own pace :).

Oh girl. I feel you. My LO had has 9mo appt on Monday and the doc told me it was time to start finger foods and let her try to feed herself. I made him give me a DETAILED explanation about what to watch out for with choking and how to react. I've been in a constant state of panic ever since. I had to leave the room last night when hubs was feeding her avocado slices.

Does solid food stress anyone else out? LO is almost 9 months old, and we've been doing mostly store bought purées, some home made, with a couple of finger foods. I never know what I should be feeding her and how (BLW, purees, finger foods or combo), what i should be introducing, how much i should be giving her, when to change textures, etc.! She's played with waffles, bananas, Cheerios and avocado, but won't eat them herself. She wants me to feed them to her. Daycare isn't happening till January, but I'm already stressed out about the what and how for food when she goes.

Add to the mix that she's small (1st percentile) and we're worried about growth, and I'm constantly over thinking the whole thing.

Am I the only one who feels like this? I wish there was a ready-set plan I could follow!
