I remember our pedi asking me questions at his 4 month check-up, like does he seem interested in what we're eating? Yes, he definitely was! So she said he may be ready, but not to push it. We waited a couple weeks and then started him on pureed pears instead of going the cereal route. Our first daughter didn't show interest in food until about 6 months while our second daughter was ready at 4-5 months.</p> <p>Babies should be able to hold their head up independently, have a good coordinated suck, swallow, breathe. He said to skip the cereal/oatmeal. We started him shortly after his 4 month appointment (5.5 mos now) and he's been doing great. He was super interested in food and still waking up every 2-3 hours at night to eat which is why our pedi recommended it. I had never considered starting before 6 months but I'm glad we did. I'm always a little surprised to hear some doctors still recommend 4 months. I thought the new official recommendation was 6 months?</p> <p>My ped recommends 6 months and we started at 1 week shy of that. </p>
