@regberadaisy: well I see the kid for just a few minutes, whereas they spend all their time with their child, so they should know better than I do whether their child is ready. I just give them the tools to figure it out!

I agree with using a skills assessment rather than going by months. I remember our pedi asking me questions at his 4 month check-up, like does he seem interested in what we're eating? Yes, he definitely was! So she said he may be ready, but not to push it. We waited a couple weeks and then started him on pureed pears instead of going the cereal route. After one day of trying, he got the hang of eating from a spoon and using his front lip to push the food back, so I knew he was good to continue!

@Mrs. Jacks: ohhhh I like that way better! I think sometimes people start at 4 just because their ped said its OK even if their baby's not totally ready!

It's not about months, it's about skills. Our first daughter didn't show interest in food until about 6 months while our second daughter was ready at 4-5 months.

Babies should be able to hold their head up independently, have a good coordinated suck, swallow, breathe. Be highly interested in foods Nd have a fair amount of trunk coordination.

My ped gave us a sheet at 4 months about them but said we could we could wait till 6 months. At 6 months, he suggested we start just giving her bites of everything we eat.

MIne said fruits and veggies at 4 months. He said to skip the cereal/oatmeal. We started him shortly after his 4 month appointment (5.5 mos now) and he's been doing great. He was super interested in food and still waking up every 2-3 hours at night to eat which is why our pedi recommended it. I had never considered starting before 6 months but I'm glad we did. He's finally getting some decent sleep and so are we!

Mine said 4 months but rice cereal only. We did not want to do rice cereal so I asked when we could start something else. She said oatmeal at 5 months and veggies/fruit at 6 months. We started a little early though because she showed she was ready.

At how many months does your doctor recommend starting solids? I'm always a little surprised to hear some doctors still recommend 4 months. I thought the new official recommendation was 6 months?

My ped recommends 6 months and we started at 1 week shy of that.
