I love the Vtech tracks. We have like 4 different ones. They all fit together and they are easy enough for. 3 yo to put together and take apart. The cars drive themselves and make all kinds of cool noises when they go over certain spots. Number one I repent play activity in our house...

My DD can play tea party FOREVER, especially if I let her sit on the kitchen floor and pour real water into the cups. She also loves to paint and play with shaving cream (weird, I know, but I will give her a cheap can and a bowl of water and she will play with it for like an hour).

@mediagirl: My kid is obsessed with throwing parties for her babies. I give her plastic silverware, paper plates, solo cup, etc and let her lose in the dining room. She'll rearrange the place settings and act out conversations for a looooong time if left undisturbed.

Will she play with cars? My son builds hot wheels tracks for hours.

He also has a road rug that gets a lot of play. Small remote control stuff, mr. Potato head, etc.

My son loves taking construction paper, glue stick and a bunch of craft items and just sticking all of it to the paper. Pompoms, felt circles, tissue paper, pipe cleaners, etc.

Also, it's not very creative, but playdoh. If I give him just one container at a time and strap him into his booster it's really not very messy! I got some tools from Melissa and Doug (but regular playdoh brand playdoh) and he'll seriously do that for an hour. (I have a glass table and wood floors though, so that eases my mind with any risk of mess).

@MrsRoo: oh yeah, I forgot to mention it's like a thousand degrees here right now. I will be okay with outdoor play...when it isn't too hot to be outside.

I forgot about play dough. We did not pack that. Maybe i'll bring that out and bring out some big boxes we are waiting until the last day to pack up and see what she comes up with. Thanks!

Do you have an outdoor space or somewhere you're okay with a mess? Dd will play for ever with play doh on the back porch. I'll also give her washable paints and it will literally keep her occupied all day if I let her. Then she has a "pool party" in the tub to get clean.

ETA: we also just did a move and used some boxes to make her a little fort in the living room. She took her toys and coloring books in there and it kept her pretty well occupied. Also let her pack and unpack her plastic plates/cups and Tupperware a zillion times. She liked feeling like she was helping.

@mediagirl: Well, I suppose some new things are in order then. Or unpack some of the toys and repack them later?

H is younger than M, but she loves wooden puzzles, trains, latch boards, and playing with legos/mega blocks. She also loves playing with her babies and "helping," so I give her a small broom when I'm sweeping and she sweeps EVERYTHING (even the carpet).

Simple puzzles? Art table with those color wonder markers or something like that? Toys she has not seen in awhile (seriously, H played with this piano that I've had in her closet for the last year for an HOUR last night).

Hit me up with activities you lay out for your kids that help them play by themselves. We are in the process of a move and will need a bunch of time to pack. We need our daughter, who is pretty good at playing by herself, to entertain herself a lot...without the boob tube. What would you suggest we plan/set out for her for individual play?

Currently she likes to build with legos or magnatiles and makes castles for her princesses and other little toys.

I don't mind purchasing some new items to give her some options.
