Agree with pp. Take yourselves to the bathroom while the dog is in the car, then give the dog a quick walk. Maybe get a snack or a coffee at the rest stop? We stop for a bathroom/coffee break on the 3 hour ride up to my parents though ;)

I would pack food and stop at a rest stop. That way you can eat and it's easy to let the dog out to potty. A dog would be fine in the car for 5 mins while you go to the restroom even if it's a warmer day as long as the windows are cracked.

we have worked around this so far, but has anyone done a road trip with just you, toddler/baby/kid, and a dog? How do you make it work, just in terms of pit stops for food and bathroom?

I recently was thinking about driving down to visit family and leave our dog with my sister while we were traveling, but it's a five hour drive and I knew I'd have to use the bathroom. Plus c hates if we stop and get out of the car then right back in. But I wouldn't really like leaving the dog in the car for the five minutes t took to use the bathroom, much less long enough to eat lunch. And that's in the cold- forget in the summer!

So... Is this just impossible? Or am I missing something?
