I think the key to BLW is honestly just to not over think it. I was a lot more neurotic abut size/shape/texture with DS, and I found BLW to be a lot more work. Now I literally just give DD what we are eating, in a variety of different sizes and shapes. She figures it out pretty well on her own!

@Greentea: She loves it though! She lost interest in purees pretty much and only wants real food! So I'm just trying to help her get better at it!

@KayKay: I think DH just made some stuff TOO soft b/c he is too nervous haha. I watch her like a hawk when she's eating!

@regberadaisy: True, once she masters it then I can give her smaller pieces!

@Bubbles: Yeah I think thats our problem too.. We cook it too soft/mushy!

@bubbles: I usually make just one egg in a bowl in the microwave (60ish seconds!) for LO. Then I just scrape it out of the bowl in one big piece and cut it into wedges or strips. Quick and easy FTW.

The other thing too is they need to get better at their pincer grip. Using their finger and thumb. Things like peas are great for practicing that!

@KayKay: how do you do scrambled eggs so that LO can pick them up? I have never worked this out!

We mostly just let LO figure it out. He has learned to not squeeze too hard or to put something in his fist and open his fist as he slides it by his mouth (so cute...). Mostly, we make a lot of messes and we have had to deal with a few gagging scares.

BLW didn't work for my LO AT ALL! I sure tried. It doesn't work for all kids and was a nightmare for us, so if it isn't ideal don't feel bad!

I really liked doing scrambled eggs, toast/french toast, and sweet potato fries early on because they were easy to grab & hold on to, and they got mushy enough to nibble off smaller bites. We did a mix of purees or BLW for fruits/veggies depending on what it was and how long I wanted the meal to take.

Also some things that she couldn't break apart worked well if we gave her really big pieces (almost as big as her hand) like broccoli or meat. Then she could easily hold it to suck on it, but it wouldn't break off. Mostly then I just had to watch to make sure she didn't shove a whole piece in her mouth, but that was easy to catch :)

They really do catch on super-fast, though, like @Mae: said.

@Mae: Good point! I need the reminder to not intervene so much and let her learn!

We dust the slippery stuff with baby cereal. Gives it enough texture for little fingers to grip to.

Time. It takes babies time to figure out how hard to squeeze thing so they don't totally mush fruit that is ripe enough for them to easily gum. Eventually they just get better at it!

DD is almost 7 mo and we've been doing a combo of BLW and self feeding puree (mostly b/c DH isn't as comfortable with BLW).

I'm having a hard time sometimes with texture... If something is too ripe, then she already breaks it in her hand before it goes in her mouth. But if it's firm enough to hold onto for a long time, then she gums/bites off a huge chunk and it just stays in her mouth. She doesn't swallow or spit out the big pieces so I often have to fish it out of her so she can keep eating (other she'd keep trying to shove additional food in her mouth with the pieces in there already). Also some things are just so slippery! Any tips and tricks?

I use mesh feeders for super slippery things like mango, and leave the peel on other things when possible to help with grip...
