@yellowskates: glad to see everything is going well! i have a lot of insecurities about breastfeeding as well and honestly tried to quit at least twice - but you give me hope and i'm going to look into a breastfeeding group now!

just wanted to thank you all again- i went to a breastfeeding group today and my little guy (who had eaten about an hour before we weighed/ate/weighed with the LCs) seems to get about an ounce per letdown, AND he has gained at least two pounds in the last three weeks (!) so i am thinking he must be getting enough, and fast :) thank you for talking me off the ledge last night!

@yellowskates: Sounds similar to us - fast letdown/fast nurser. I would just caution those, as your LO gets older, try to keep switching left & right boons evenly and try to nurse at least 5 min. I think that was the number I read. My LO always preferred the R boob because more came out faster, and she would often just nurse 3-4 min. My L boob just produced less and less. And I think my supply was hit by the short feedings, so after a few months, when my supply regulated, I never had much milk if I pumped or expressed.

I was the exact same way - very fast feeding and let down. I stuck to one side at a time and that's how we still do it! We definitely had 4 hour stretches from 4-8 weeks so I wouldn't worry. It sounds like you are doing great mama!

It sounds like you have tons of milk, and a very fast let down! My daughter (now 13 months) usually takes one side at a feeding too. I used to worry, because all the advice out there says to "always offer the second side", and she was not interested! Weight gain and wet diapers are the best way to know if your baby is getting enough. Your baby is way more efficient than the pump at removing milk from the breast, so it's quite possible he is getting even more than you can pump! Also, as your baby gets a little older/stronger/bigger he will be able to take in more milk per nursing session, and therefore go longer between feedings. A few good websites to check out on all things breastfeeding are http://www.kellymom.com and http://www.breastfeedinginc.ca
You're doing a great job! Keep up the good work mama!

Sounds to me like you just have a lot if milk that comes out fast and he is full quickly! C was the opposite and could nurse for hours but I am told it's all normal.

hello! i am six weeks into this mama thing and i have some lingering questions that i can't seem to get rid of, so i thought i'd come here for some help!

the biggest:
how do you know if your little one is getting enough, beyond diapers and weight gain? can you rely on lack of hunger cues, for example? my little guy usually eats very quickly - as in, 5-7 minutes - through usually 2-3 let downs and rarely takes the other boob. he often gets fussy at the boob after a burping as well, and won't go back on. today he went 4 hours between feeds for the first time, and this was after only eating on one side for that short period of time.

when i pump, i tend to get a good number of ounces, fast. typically, between 5-9 after only pumping for about ten minutes. is this a sign that he is likely getting all he needs in that 5 minutes/3 let downs and i just need to chill out?

blerg, so many doubts and questions. any experiences or thoughts welcome! thank you in advance!
