I was going to say ... even tiny animals sound HUGE!!! And a raccoon will sound like there's a human being!! ;) Glad you have answers.

So, apparently it's just mice. The guy made me feel so much better in that he said when they get under the insulation, they sound a lot bigger as the insulation drives the sound down. So don't I feel like a prize idiot! Ah well...at least it's not something worse!

Now it's DH's job to set traps. Also something I didn't know...you should put the peanut butter on the bottom of the bait pad and not the top. They can steal it away from the top far easier, where you almost always catch them as they try to get it off of the bottom of the pad. The more you know!

@Mrs. Goose: I guess you'd have to figure out where they're getting in and set traps near those areas. I grew up in a house where a field behind us eventually became houses. All of the field mice came into the existing houses, so I'm used to having mice...just not...bigger things :silly:

@2PeasinaPod: I'm sure it's squirrels and who knows what else is the big thing I have heard a few times...eek. I try not to think about it. I know these animals can cause a lot of damage, but I don't even know how you'd get them out. Cut holes in the walls?

@Mrs. Goose: We have mice as well. They're mainly in our basement and garage. We get them every summer and catch at least 5/season. I don't know where the heck they're getting in!

@MrsADS: This is very much what I'm worried about. I'm afraid that for as long as I've heard this, it's going to be an expensive fix. Hopefully what ever is up there hasn't chewed on any electrical wires.

We had a possum. Very large. We called an animal removal company to come find it. It was pretty horrible and expensive. It had gotten into our a/c ducts.

We have mice in our house. I hear them every once in a while. A few times I have heard something bigger sounding in the wall innour bedroom. We put a mouse trap in our attic and it has caught at least 4 mice since it has been up there for 6 months, but I also hear them on the main level of my house above my head so they're in between the floor.

We called someone but they said they only do squirrels specifically and do that one hole one way method you described above. So for now we are leaving it until something bad happens I guess or until we see one in the actual house.

@gingerbebe: Good to know! Thank you! I'm all about getting this taken care of asap. We're waiting for a company to call us back to see if we can get them out today. Apparently this company seals up all of the holes except one, and makes it so that they can get out but not in, then seals that hole. It's also apparently not cheap :bummed:

@MommySLP: Cats! That's totally unexpected! I hope it's something as simple as that! I'd rather have cats than a raccoon or a rat.

+1 what @gingerbebe: said! Had that problem with an old office bldg. Not sure where you are but could also be raccoons, squirrels, cats. You need to get an inspection done and many companies can also walk you through all the holes where they might be coming in. Good luck!

Also, if you have any trees that hit your roof line, especially any fruit bearing ones, get them cut way back, or your critters will use it as a highway to jump onto your roof.

@2PeasinaPod: we had that & thought it was a raccoon until one night in the middle of the night we heard meowing!!! Turned out it was kittens! It was a place in the attic that we couldn't access so we had to wait til mama cat moved the babies & then we found out how she had gotten in & fixed it.

Its probably a rat. Call a service.

And handle it ASAP. The previous owners of our home did not and by the time we figured out what the hell was going on, the rats had tunneled through all of our attic insulation and it we spent $5000 getting it ripped out, sanitized, and reinsulated. They have to find the hole(s) they are getting into and block them all off.

We've had that happen from time to time. We set up one of these live traps to catch the critter. You also need to go around your house and look for and seal up the access point. The critters never did much damage. The sooner you get them out the better though! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BQPGQQ?tag=amz-mkt-chr-us-20&ascsubtag=1ba00-01000-a0032-win70-other-nomod-us000-pcomp-feature-pcomp-wm-2-wm-1-wm-1&ref=bit_pcomp_ask

I used to work in a building that was 200 years old (and had been a part of the Underground Railroad!) and we had tons of "critters" that would run around in the walls and ceilings. In the 6 years I worked there, I heard little feet in the ceiling of my office most days and they never really caused any damage. One died in the hallway ceiling once, and it did smell so I would recommend getting someone out to your house to figure out how they are getting in and how to lure them out.

Yikes! We had a squirrel in our ductwork once. My husband got it out (he's a wildlife biologist and has his rabies vaccine) and it hadn't caused any damage. I hope yours hasn't caused too much damage!

I work from home 2x/week, and my office is in the middle of the house. It's right next to our youngest son's room, and there's a tree that sometimes scrapes the side of the house.

For the last few weeks, I've been hearing the scraping pretty consistently which I thought was weird. Today, I put it together...that's not the tree...there is something in our attic, and it sounds big! I heard footsteps go right above me and over towards our son's room. This is seriously freaking me out! Someone talk me down and tell me that the raccoon (or whatever the heck it is) hasn't done a ton of damage :bummed:
