I agree it's always greener on the other side. I'm renting and it hasn't been a pleasant experience. I miss the autonomy and not sharing walls.

The grass is always greener! Haha. We own a condo, but we rent it out (so we are landlords) and we rent the place we live in right now. Owning sucks for many reasons, especially since we are in a condo association and that's ALWAYS stressful (assessment anyone??) and of course you can't really make big changes, which is the big reason to own anyway. We are looking forward to owning and living in a house in the future, but yes, it's quite time consuming (and $$$ consuming!) to maintain.

As renters, it's so convenient to ask the landlord for repairs and not worry about paying for things when they break. Also, our landlord sends landscapers AND snow shovelers so we don't have to do any of that work. The same team maintains their own home so we KNOW the team will come! We have an amazing landlord which helps so much... but I do wish we could just settle down and live in a place long term. If it were a more ideal location and place (we live right in front of a super busy intersection, and no useable yard space) we'd consider staying long term because the rent is amazing and she never raises it on us.

I can't wait to unload the condo, but we can't sell without taking a HUGE loss, so we just gotta suck it up and be landlords for now! SUPER stressful between tenants when we're not sure if we'll have to lose a month because of a vacant apartment... luckily we have great management who takes care of most on-premises maintenance, and a fantastic broker who always finds us good tenants, and a great cleaning service that cleans between tenants. But of course that all costs MUCHO DINERO!!!!

AMEN! We fixed the garbage disposal (for the millionth time) and then our ice machine decides to die. We had to paint the exterior of the house this past summer and redid our garage. If it's not one thing, it's another and it's not even the fun stuff like new renovations or decorations! It's mostly all maitenance!

Ugh, preach girl! The end of 2012 has been really trying!! We needed our fridge repaired, the furnace started leaking water, and we had a lot of tree damage from the freak winter storm that hit New England in October. We also have a tiny house now, I cant IMAGINE having a huge one!!

Being pregnant just adds to my stress levels too cause all I can think about is daycare expenses and medical bills piling up....

I agree, I remember calling my landlord for every little thing when I was in college. Luckily my hubby usually takes care of household repairs so I don't have to worry about it. Of course I still have to worry about the money ...

I feel ya! Those days can be soooo stressful. Two weeks after we bought our house we had a bad windstorm. A few tree's went down. Fortunately nothing hit the house, but just blocked our driveway and what not. Still was out first not fun experience after not even owning for a month to not be able to call the landlord to "fix" the prob!

I'm a glutton for punishment! We own our house and we own rental properties so I have to fix all of our stuff AND I also get the calls to fix the other people's stuff. Just this summer, a tree fell on one rental house, the water heater burst in another and the basement flooded in the third. I just have to keep repeating "it's a long term investment" over and over again in my head....

I think roofs are the biggest (costliest) thing to repair for when owning a home. So look at it this way, you will have gone through the worst....and everything from then on will be easy peasy.

I think renting is definitely easier. I don't think any one would disagree with that. But just remember easier isn't always better! I know how you're feeling right now. 4 months after we bought our house we found out that a pipe was leaking under the concrete slab under our kitchen. So they had to rip out half my kitchen and drill through the concrete slab to repair it. It absolutely sucked to deal with but now it's all over and we can move on. Insurance covered us so all it cost us was the deductible. As long as you have good insurance you should be fine. Owning a home is certainly stressful, but I think it's totally worth it.

this (probably) won't be helpful but I'll try!

we rent and I love everything about it, EXCEPT:

my landlords are my ILs, and they are slow to fix things. i.e.: flooding last March (we live in RI), still have not fixed our water damage over here from roof.

also, we can't decorate outside for holidays..major BOO because the Christmas season is my favorite!

I know what you mean. I'm a new homeowner and I miss calling someone to do repairs for free. We recently had a pipe bust and that was no fun. And today we got a warning from the HOA about our grass being too tall. The funny part is I opened the letter after my husband cut the grass this afternoon. *sigh* Of course they don't know that my husband has been working for two weeks straight on night shift.

Yeah, people always say buying is better than renting but that isn't true for everyone because you need to have much more in reserves for when things go wrong and you need to pay for it.

So we had some storm damage on our roof over the summer. My father-in-law patched it up for us but said we'd def. need to be getting it replaced soon. It's not leaking or anything, but we have the money to pay our deductible now, so we turned it into insurance and are waiting for the adjuster to come check it out on Wed. I'm so nervous! I really hope it goes through and works out. We for sure don't have the money to replace the roof ourselves. Sometimes I just wish we didn't have to deal with expensive home repairs, and could just call the landlord. I know, the grass is always greener, right? Just needed to have a little mini-vent. Feeling a little overwhelmed.
