@locavore_mama: I started with Lorelei once she had teeth. She has always preferred it to any other brush (we had the baby banana one, one that fit over my finger, and an infant/toddler size soft bristle one). At that age it was just whatever she'd easily let me use so she would get used to brushing. Now that she has all her teeth other than her two-year molars, it is nice to be able to quickly feel like I can do a decent job. Sometimes she wants to do it herself, and even then I feel like there's at least some cleaning getting accomplished.

I also have bad teeth and go for cleanings four times a year- the sonicare made a really big difference with my cleanings! But I did also step up my flossing at the same time. My dentist recommended sonicare or oral b, didn't care which one, and said to get one with a timer. We got a two pack at target- two brushes and motor/handles, but one charger. I couldn't share the base!

Like pps said don't scrub just hold at the base of each tooth.

@TurtleDoves: you must have a tidy SO! we each have our own because he doesn't wash & dry his after he uses it. toothbrush grime freaks me out! haha.

i wanted the sonicare platinum they have on display at target (i think that's what it's called), but they were out in store, so i ended up with an oral b instead. i love it! i have one with a whitening brush on it & it makes such a difference, it has a bunch of different modes and it flashes red if i push too hard. my mom has the same one but with flosser heads and she loves it more than the nice sonicare she had prior.

i just looked it up on amazon and it's 43% off & there's a $7 coupon you can clip, so it's only $58! wow!

@Adira: absolutely worth it. However you definitely can get a better deal at Costco or Amazon. I would ask your dentist which model he is selling you. Costco.com will sell you items even if you are not a member but they charge a small surcharge (5% I think?) They have a set of 2 Elites for $70!

My dentist absolutely recommends the Sonicare and my visits are so much less painful after I started using it.

I have an Elite model that just died after being used daily since 2004. So they are long lasting too.

Btw my dental hygienist friend told me that the Sonicare is way better than the cheapy $10 electric ones because this one moves in multiple directions while the $10 ones just spin. It apparently doesn't clean your teeth as well.

@Adira: Oh that is funny. Well I still recommend doing as much of it as you can, when you can :) And it sounds like the sonicare are fine as long as you don't scrub with it.

@Adira: FWIW my FIL is a dentist and doesn't recommend the electric toothbrushes because he says he sees more damage done to the gums by these (although the studies done don't show significantly more damage). He HIGHLY recommends this simple protocol of mouthwashes for decreasing plaque. We've been using it and it works GREAT.
Here is the link and if you are going to do it, follow her directions. http://askdrellie.blogspot.com/p/zellies-kit.html
But here is the basic gist:
Rinse with Closys rinse (walgreens), then brush with plain crest.
Rinse with Listerine, rinse brush in Listerine to kill germs
Then rinse with plain Original Act.
Finally try to get some Xylitol in during the day either in gum or mints. It's easy and makes a big difference!

ETA this link is not for my FIL's practice or anything, it is just a series of steps that he agrees is very effective. :)

I've been using one for nine years and DH has had one for the last three years. We now both have the Diamond Care and we love them. Usually you can get a better deal if you purchase through your dentist.

I have a close friend who's an ortho and she gets them for us at cost. I think we paid $65/each.

Totally and completely worth it! I asked for mine for Christmas a couple of years ago because I didn't want to spend the money on it, but I absolutely would now. Not that I had bad teeth before, but my cleanings require so much less effort than before. And my gums are in way better shape.

@Adira: Totally worth it, it's what I recommend for my patients. The only thing you do different is that you don't "scrub" with an electric toothbrush, just place it on each tooth surface for a couple of seconds and move on. Oh and they all have a 2 minute timer on them and you'll realize how long 2 mins really is!

@Mamaof2: There is a big difference, stay far away from the $10 battery operated spinbrushes. They can do more damage to your gums than good because it is too aggressive. Also the FDA recalled them a few years back because it was causing teeth to chip. http://www.fda.gov/ForConsumers/ConsumerUpdates/ucm291790.htm

I rarely have teeth issues; however, I always get complimented by my dentists over the years about how great my "home care" is and I almost never floss.
