@sweetooth: I used to think skorts were the skirt in the front/shorts in the back combos of my youth, and it took my awhile to get on board with the skirt/bike short combos. I don't think these look like tennis skirts and the length is quite good on me. I wear the Athleta Whatever and the Wherever.

@looch: If you shop at Costco, I saw that they had some golf skirts today. (This may be unique to my area...pretty much all of the PGA lives here.) They're the same idea as tennis skirts, but longer and with a discreet tee pocket (bonus!). I bought one, but I may not keep it because it's a tad big. The solid color ones would totally pass as regular casual skirts.

@sweetooth: Yeah I have no problem with a high price point and the worth of an individual designer and USA produced product... but I also have no budget for it :) Also as an aside, I stressed all about clothes that were breastfeeding friendly while I was pregnant but after the first few months, LO eats at pretty regular times and it's usually zero issue since I nurse him before we leave or when we get home. I think I was picturing having to whip out my boobs at a moment's notice like the newborn days forever! :)

@honeybear: @looch: I will definitely have to look into skorts :) I used to always think of them as tennis attire, but it makes total sense if you want the look of a skirt, but the coverage of a short when you're keeping up with the kids.

@scg00387: I thought about the stomach thing too, wondering how comfortable I might be in something so form-fitting after pregnancy. There is the one shorter dress that might work for a 5'-2" frame. But yes, the price point is high. I always consider the prices on kickstarter as additional funding for the project - but her dress prices are up there.

@honeybear: We hope to have another child too, so it's definitely good to think about the lifespan, and functionality of maternity purchases.

So glad I posted this and got some feedback from you guys :) Thanks!

@looch: Whoops, missed your second post! I use Athleta, too. I also got a Fila skirt from Costco a few months ago. They didn't sell well, so I bought a few more when they reduced them to $10 each. I'm on the lookout for more options--I'll let you know if I find any good ones!

@sweetooth: Agreed. I think the pictures suggest that they mean to target moms of elementary-aged kids, so BFing may not be an issue. My toddler doesn't BF anymore, but I hope to have more children, so I always have that in the back of my mind.

I highly recommend athletic skirts! They look a lot less like pajamas than yoga pants do (to me, anyway), they stretch, they're easy to move in, and they CYA (literally!).

In the final analysis, I guess I don't really want to wear something marketed as a "mom dress," you know? ;)

Hmm. I think these would be extremely unflattering on me at 5'2 and with distended stomach muscles. I'm not sold. If I really want to run around, I wear pants. If I want to look cute at the same time, I wear a cotton blend maxi skirt or dress. Machine wash or not, there is no way I'd wear a dress that expensive to roll around in the mud! But I'm probably not her target audience :)

@honeybear: I love the skorts (skirts with bike shorts undereath), those are my mom uniform on weekends with a simple tee shirt.

The dresses are cute and I give her kudos for following her dream, but unless those dresses show up at TJMaxx for $19.99, I probably wouldn't go out of my way to buy one.

@honeybear: Very good points. And without any experience as a mom yet (only an aunt who loves to get down on the floor with my nephew and play trucks) I'm sure there would be some eventual flashing with these dresses.

As for the breastfeeding, maybe these dresses were targeted more for moms with kids who are out of that phase?

Thanks for commenting. I may be swept up in the fantasy of how motherhood will be and not aware of realities yet. I'll stick with my yoga pants :)

I was kind of excited to see what this was about, but I'm not sure it's as awesome as it sounds. I have three thoughts about this business plan (based only on looking at the website): 1) there are a lot of dresses made out of modal around, 2) none of the pictured styles could be worn while BFing, and 3) when I heard "play dress" I figured it meant "skort" or some other underwear-hiding innovation (like the tennis skirt with attached biker shorts I currently have on). The chief problem with the A-line and pencil skirt dresses (and even the maxi dresses) I have in my closet is not that they are made out of the wrong material, it's that I either can't play with my toddler in them because the shape is not suited for that, or if I do, I will eventually flash anyone around. I'm not sure how making them in polyester solves those fairly intractable problems. Maybe I'm missing something?

I was reading Design Mom and came across this great kickstarter campaign that I thought might be worth sharing on here. I'm a little late to the game so a lot of the lower priced backer positions are filled. But if you have the interest and funds to support this, I think it's a fantastic idea! Be sure to watch the video she created to learn more about the dresses and her story.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1378041729/sonnet-james-play-dresses-for-playful-moms

I'm pregnant with my first child right now, so I don't know what my parenting style will be like. But I do know I want to be comfortable enough to never worry about ruining my clothes when I'm participating in playtime. I look forward to being a kid again :)
