In the beginning, it was all a guessing game because we couldn't figure out if she was hungry or just wanted to suck, so we would try the pacifier first, and when that didn't work, I would offer the breast. Most of the time she only wanted it to sleep. If she started falling asleep on my breast, I would remove her and offer the pacifier to her if she woke up (so she wouldn't hurt my nipples from the shallow sucking)

My LO won't take the soother if she's hungry, just when she's sleepy. Works for me!

@artbee: He's been really inconsistent with the feeding: sometimes wanting to feed when it's been less than an hour since the last one.....other times 3 or 4 hours.. I think maybe sometimes he was feeding when he wasn't really hungry just because he loves to suck. I guess if he doesn't ask for it, I can just go for every 4 hours, which is the longest he has ever gone between feedings.

I would wait until he takes it consistently before you worry about these things. My LO took the paci a couple of times but that's it, it's been her thumb and only her thumb ever since.

Do you have a feeding schedule? I think if it's been a certain number of hours, you'll be able to figure out that your LO is hungry, but obviously if you just fed him an hour ago you can assume it's just fussy time.

So, baby has had his very first soother time tonight (4.5 weeks old). I tried it a couple times this week but he spat it out, but tonight he was fussy and when we tried it he LOVED it.

But now I wonder:

How will I know when he's hungry vs when he wants a soother?

Should I let him take the soother all the time, or just reserve it for special occasions of fussiness?

What else do I need to consider?
