Personally, the popularity would be a turn-off for me no matter how much I loved the name. I like the cat idea.

If if feels right, it feels right. I'd have name regret if I didn't choose the name I absolutely loved because it's popular. I was one of three girls with the same name in my classes growing up no matter where we lived, and we moved a lot due to military. I didn't care, and it was fun to compare spellings. I asked my mom did she care that my name ended up becoming so popular, and she said no the name felt right for her! Must be a good name lol.

i understand people not wanting to use names if they are really popular, but if you truly love the name and are attached to it, and don't like the other options as much, then i say go for it.

My grandma's name was Sophia, though she used an alternate pronunciation ( So-fye-uh) that I really love. I'd love to name our daughter after her, but we're not considering it due to its popularity - it'd be bad enough for her to be in a class with three other girls with the same name, let alone to have to remind people of the pronunciation all the time.

I    both Sophie & Sophia, hence why we picked this name for our Daughter (Sophie). I only know of one other Sofia. I'm always surprised it comes up so high on the popularity charts because I hardly ever see it irl, unlike Olivia which we both liked but decided was too common (among people we know).

My son's name has been in the top 10 in France for at least a decade (my son is half French), but we went for it anyways because it is a name I loved looooong before having children. His name is also very classic, so it it's not a trendy name that will sound dated.

It might depend on your area. Where I live it seems like there's usually a Sophia or Sophie. I haven't seen it on the jennifer/Jessica level but there's a lot. It's a pretty name and I don't dislike popular names but I do feel like whether it's gym or music or preschool or the playground there's just always one around. I think it'd be too much for me.

But with that said, it's your kid and if you love the name, who cares what anyone else thinks?

My best advice if you love it and it has personal meaning, is to just try it out while baby is still cooking. If you start calling the baby Sophia for a couple of weeks, just the two of you, then you can get a better feel for how it fits or how you REALLY feel about it. There are 2 names that we like on paper, but 1 has stolen my heart when I used it (27 weeks pregnant), and I'm dreading switching to the other name just because the first one feels so right:)

I voted middle name only cuz I didn't name my own daughter Sophia. My twins korean names mean wisdom, so I loved the name Sophia but it was too popular so I nixed it. FYI, Sonia also means wisdom, which I was open to but my hubby didn't like it.

When choosing a name for our first LO, it was important to me to find something that was classic and not in the top 100. The name we chose ended up not even breaking 200, so we were pretty happy with that.

We're TTC and dreaming about naming a second LO if she's a girl. My husband loves the name Sophia. He likes that it means "wisdom" in Greek (he minored in philosophy while in college), and on our honeymoon to Europe, the Hagia Sophia was our favorite part of the trip. I agree that it is a lovely name.

However, Sophia has been the number one most popular name for girls for three years running. It was still in the top five years before that. It might be even more popular than it appears on the Social Security website when you combine the different spellings (Sophie, Sofie, Sofia, etc.). Should we let the popularity of the name influence our decision to use it?
