Yeah we routinely ditch bath toys and teethers that have airholes like that. Even bleaching them regularly, they eventually get moldy if water has gotten in.

Some YouTube vloggers that I watch cut theirs open, and it didn't have any mold in it. Theirs had been through two kids. They said they always make sure never to submerge it in water.

I bet the worst/ grossest Sophie's are from the cleanest people- like if you cleaned it all the time, that much more water would get in.

My older daughter loved it, the younger one so so. I always put my finger over the hole when washing it but I know other people washed it and water must have gotten in. I am not terribly surprised. Not even sure where ours is at this point.

I was surprised people would think this didn't happen. It's like rubber duckies, never really seem like a good idea to me.

I'm surprised people are surprised. Don't all squeaky toys/toys with air holes get gross and have to be replaced? I think people are looking for a reason to hate on a $25 teether lol.

We submerged ours in water a few times and we cut it open yesterday...there was some mold in there but not as bad as in the article. Luckily my kids weren't that crazy about Sophie. DS2 is 9 months and prefers chewing on all sorts of other things.

I haven't opened it, but I"m sure there's probably stuff in it at this point. It's old. (Eta, it's not in use, I'd have to find it at the bottom of one of the toy bins..) I don't understand why this is surprising to people to be honest!

We are done with ours after 2 years and I just cut it open... nothing inside! We definitely never submerged it and my LO wasn't sucking on it every day or anything like that.

I've got the Sophie teether I should probably check out....

Personally, I always think the Sophie toys get so nasty looking so fast - they seem to attract a coating of dirt and look dingy.

I didn't cut it open, but I remember thinking that the air hole seemed like a bad idea. I ultimately pitched our Sophie after LO managed to suck some of the paint off of it.

Has anyone cut their Sophie Giraffe open after seeing this article http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/home/cleaning/news/a42382/sophie-the-giraffe-mold/

Does this concern you at all if your LO has a Sophie?
