@littleowl88: thank goodness! I'm no doctor, but I personally would wait it out a few days to see if it goes away on its own. Especially if it doesn't seem to bother her and you don't see any other sores. Hope it's nothing and it goes away ASAP!

@tequiero21: Nothing anywhere else, thankfully! And no fever or anything else that makes me think she might be sick - she's a pretty happy baby otherwise!

@IRunForFun: Ah, you're right! I wasn't thinking. For some reason, I had thought canker sores were also spread via contact.

Poor thing!! I hope it clears up quickly!

Does she have any sores elsewhere on the body? I know Coxsackie has been going around.... Hope it's nothing extreme like that!

@theotherstark: I think that only applies to herpetic sores, which are usually on the outside of the mouth. Canker sores are different and I don't believe they can be passed person to person?

Ouch! I hate canker sores! That was my first thought when reading your prompt. Poor baby ... I hope she finds relief, and it heals soon.

It might be a good idea to get in touch with a lactation consultant. She should be able to help find comfortable ways for her to nurse, and/or give you resources for maintaining supply if baby isn't on the breast as often.

@littleowl88: Just saw your comment - if he gets them, and kissed her when he had one, I bet that could be what it is!

@Vegmama: She's only 7 weeks old, so not chewing on anything yet

DH says it looks just like the canker sores he gets fairly often. But can a very young infant get canker sores?? If so, not sure why the doctor wouldn't mention that.

How old is your baby? Any chance she was chewing on something, and it scratched the top of her mouth?

That's all I could think of!! Sorry to not have any advice. Best wishes!!

E started being fussy during BFing the last couple weeks. She'll eat for a few minutes, then start crying -- really hard. It's not every time, but it has increased in frequency lately. She's fine when she takes a bottle. (She is 7 weeks old.)

Then yesterday I noticed what looked like a little sore or ulcer on the roof of her mouth, kind of far back. It's flat and whitish with what looks to be an indentation in the middle.

We went to the doctor today and she ruled out reflux and agreed with me that the sore was unusual but said she didn't really know what it was! She even consulted with another doctor who wasn't sure either. She said maybe it's thrush, but E doesn't have any whitish patches anywhere else (tongue and inside of cheeks are totally normal) and I don't have any symptoms either.

She gave us a prescription for nystatin and said to try it out and see if it gets better.... but I'm hesitant to put her on a medication if she doesn't really need it. I tried changing BFing positions to see if maybe something else doesn't aggravate it as much, but it works sometimes, not always.

At this point I am trying to BF her as much as possible, but if she's really fighting it, we'll give her a bottle of pumped milk since that doesn't seem to bother her.

Anyone else have a kid with this kind of symptom? If so, what did it turn out to be and how did you fix it? She seems to be in so much pain and it is so heartbreaking  Oh, and her weight gain is totally fine so she IS eating even though it takes a while to get her settled.
