I read "Raising your spirited child" and found most of the book too vague to be useful, but there was one thing that was a light bulb moment. Something about how some kids don't have tantrums to get their way - they have spillover tantrums from being tired/overwhelmed/upset about something unrelated. If nothing else, this idea helped me stop wondering how my kid can amaze me with his maturity one minute, and the next minute melt down over a candy wrapper and cry so much you'd think I took all candy away forever. It's not about the candy, he's not insane, and he probably just needs a hug, dinner, or an earlier bedtime :silly:

@snowjewelz: Of course I can't think of anything tangible to use as an example, now that I have had time away from the situation hat triggered this post (ha ha), I can see certain contributing factors to the major melt down, and will definitely try not to push them aside like I did at the time! I should probably try to listen to Lansbury's podcast, but I don't really ever listen to podcasts so I need to find a good time to do it!

I’ve found “How to talk...” helpful and also “Raising Your Spirited Child” - I found myself nodding along like somehow the author had met my kid (and totally understood my exhaustion!) as I read that one. The practical tips were helpful for us, and I felt like I came away with a better perspective in general on some of my three year old’s strong willed tendencies.

@mrsbubbletea: Do you have a specific situation or concern? I love Janet Lansbury too; maybe my memory can jog up some of stuff I've read/listened to that would be helpful!

I like “How to talk...” and “No drama discipline”. They both give solid techniques to use, even if it’s a process for me to access them.

I have a 3yo boy who can drive me up the wall so I sympathize!! I have the talk so little kids will listen book and I like it a lot in terms of good ideas - but it didn’t solve all my issues. It is not what I would call a discipline book - more an approach book. I made a similar post a while back I will try to link to it had other ideas.

Books I was thinking of checking out:’how to talk so young children will listen or whatever that one is called, peaceful parent happy child, something called 123 magic or whatever that one is? Basically sell me on your favorite discipline book and why.

Just kidding... but for real. I need a reboot on parenting/techniques for my 3 yo (turned 3 in December to be more specific). He’s challenging, high energy, wild, and I feel like I need some help. I want to read a book with some solid simple advice. I have read some Janet Lansbury and it resonates with me and yet it’s not concrete enough to help me in the moment. I need gentle parenting for dummies techniques.
