We have the whale one. You can either set a timer for 15, 30, or 60 min (I think those are the times anyway) or just let the sound and/or projection run all night. We play the waves all night and have since lo was about five months I think. That was a year ago! Couldn't survive without them! IDK about being afraid of the dark, though I thought DD had a few instances that made me think that. However, darkness rules in her room. We have blackout curtains. We can't even leave the light on the Graco at night, because she is so sensitive to it. It's just soft white noise that keeps any nighttime noises from disturbing L and helps him fall back asleep if he does wake up at night. We love it, we never turn it off, even during the day. I forget it's on. A friend came over a couple weeks ago and was freaking out trying to figure out why there was a heartbeat sound in J's room HAHA! :) I don't even notice it anymore.
