@twoofeverything: That's sort of hilarious. And frightening. I'm picturing the mailman being afraid to ring the bell during nap time :)

Follow up question-- is the Marpac worth the extra money? It seems kind of pricey, wouldn't a basic one do the same, or just, no, it's worth the money?

I made the mistake of putting LO's white noise on the heartbeat sound, and now they're hooked. Remember that Edgar Allen Poe story, Telltale Heart? That's what it sounds like in my house anytime the babies are asleep.

I don't have a baby on the outside yet, but for myself, I love rain storm & thunder sounds! I have an app on my iPad and use it every night. Can't sleep without it.

Plain white noise, marpac dohm is amazing, we live in NYC and it does a great job blocking out the sounds.

Huh- I always pictured the sounds kind being better but everyone seems to prefer the plain white noise! Good to know!

I like plain white noise. I can't relax when it's ocean sounds, I anticipate the next sound.

We have a marpac, I got it at bed bath and beyond.

Plain white noise/static! I think it covers up other noises the best. We have the marpac dohm and like it a lot.

I have the mybaby soundspa one and love it. We play ocean sounds for LO all night and naps. He sleeps pretty well so I assume he likes it!

ETA - it's not rolling ocean waves - there isn't much differentiation between each wave.

What kind of sound machine do you have? Do you think the plain white noise or the actual sounds, like rain forest, ocean waves, etc, are better for baby? We live in the city, so some noise from outside is inevitable, plus our dog occasionally will bark kind of loud (not often, but could be jarring when it happens).

If you have one you love, please recommend it specifically! I know I want something I can have running all night, not a timed thing, given the random city noises and early morning barking fits from our neighbor's dog!
