My husband and I did it many years back and he lost 20lbs and I lost 15 from it. It was SO HARD in the beginning and was so strict. But we both ended up gaining it all back once we stopped. :(

My best friend does SB whenever she feels she needs a "quick fix" weight loss solution, as she will drop a bunch of weight right away from not eating carbs. She always puts it right back on, with friends.
I do not feel it is a long term solution for anyone.
My friends and family members who have done weight watchers have had much better success and long term results, primarily because it teaches you portion control (which I think most of us who have weight to lose need to learn) and lets you eat like a normal person.
Remember, no matter what "diet" you pick, if you're looking for long term results, you are talking about a lIFESTYLE change, so whatever you pick, it needs to be something you can live with long term.

As others have said, I think South Beach follows some really good general principles for how to generally eat healthier that will also lead to weight loss, like cutting processed carbs (bread, wraps, etc) and sugar. A LOT of diets follow this rule (Paleo, gluten-free, etc) for good reason. Plus South Beach isn't like Atkins where it says to eat whatever you want, as long as it's not carbs. I second what someone else said about skipping Phase 1 if it's too strict (I don't think you get any fruit) and going right to stage 2, it should still work for you. I've never "followed" it per se, but I have the South Beach Quick and Easy Cookbook and it's part of my regular rotation since as a general rule I try not to eat refined carbs.

I lost 10 lbs in one month on SBD before my wedding, so it was good. But then we tried it again a year or so later and didn't have as much success. I can't stick with it as a long term lifestyle change, so I would say that it's only good for a quick fix (for me at least)

I have done it and gotten good results, but eating such a high protein diet for an extended period of time can be harmful so be aware of that. It is great for breaking those sugar cravings though, and I am always amazed how much energy I have when my blood sugar isn't up and down all day from eating carbs.

Didn't exactly do South beach, but lost 30 lbs in 2.5 months cutting all carbs and sugar. Lots of protein, veggies, fruits and nuts. I'm about to start again after the new year to get my mummy tummy to go away. Last week of freedom. :(

I did it a few years back and had good results! It made me realize how much sugar I was consuming! The first couple of days were hard and also it's worth mentioning that after a week or so I didn't feel it was working. Then all of the sudden, boom, I was getting thinner!

I haven't tried south beach but I have had small success with a book titled "how the rich get thin." I loosely followed it (applied its general principles) and noticed a difference instantly. My mom swears by it as well, and she has tried everything from south beach to gluten free to everything in between.

I tried it a few years back way before having kids. I lost 7 lbs in 2-ish months (that was my goal). I learned how to cut back on sugar, mostly.... and how to eat healthy snacks (like almonds). The first two weeks are the hardest.... you basically just eat protein and veggies... There's no calorie counting or "points", so you should eat whenever you feel hungry, but you're supposed to learn to make better food decisions.

You could also skip the first two weeks and just start with Stage 2 (where you can eat some healthy carbs), but it does take longer to see results that way. It is however, a less drastic change in diet.

I found the book to be a good read, so I'd recommend reading it first. Good luck if you decide to try it!

I tried it years ago, and I didn't like it. I felt hungry all the time, didn't lose any weight and all the sugar free stuff gave me horrible gas. Like I was at a bar with friends and had to leave cause it was so bad and embrassing.

I don't know anyone else that tried it and had success.

Has anyone done this?

I am slightly overweight. I was before baby and then I gained 60lbs when pregnant. At 36 weeks pregnant, I found out that I have a congenital heart defect. The extra weight when I was pregnant caused it to get worse, so I'd really like to get myself healthy and lighter. I worked with a girl who did South Beach and had ridiculously awesome results from it. I've done a bunch of research and I like that it detoxes your body and then teaches you how to eat healthy, which is really what I need.

So, any personal experience? Would you recommend it? Why or why not?
