WE usually just heat up LOs room for a couple hours before and then we turn it off before we go to bed, and then keep the door shut to keep the heat in. This usually works very well, I get too nervous leaving a space heater running all night.

We had the same issues. I can't remember how old your LO is? We ended up putting ours in the center of the room because I was nervous about having it up on anything or near anything. Also she has a smoke detector in her room. We run it most of the time (it has a temperature set so it only comes on when it goes below 68 degrees) but I turn it off very few days at least to give it a break for at least a few hours.

My only real concern with it at this point is that I don't really want her near it. I wouldn't want to have it where it is if she was mobile in her room. It is cool to the touch but still, it isn't a toy and I don't really want her touching it/playing with it. I assume/hope that next year she will still be in a crib. When we move her to a toddler bed I don't know what we will do!

I struggled with this same problem. We ended up getting one with good reviews and a built in timer and thermostat. The room has a smoke detector, and our room is right across the hall. So far so good!

We put ours in the middle of the room only at night, and we put a smoke detector very close by.

@Foodnerd81: We have a "safe heat" oil space heater that doesn't get super hot to the touch (like, LO touches it all the time) but it can really heat a space. But it may be too large if her room is very small. There's also this one on amazon--not sure how hot the face gets, but it says it's housed in "cool-touch housing".

C's room is the coldest in the house, and lately we have to have the heat up to an uncomfortable level everywhere else just to have it be not really cold in her room. So, inspired by mrs. Bees post, I think we need a space heater in there.

However her room is very small and doesn't have a lot of space for anything, so I'm wondering what safety precautions I need to watch for and where I can safely position on in there. My friend has hers on a shelf across from the crib, is that ok?

There is almost no floor space so it has to be up on something or smack dab in the center of the room.

Also if you have one do you just turn it on for naps and bedtime or do you run it more constantly? We pretty much only go into her room for changes and bed/nap time.
