My oldest tries and I always remind him that he needs to let brother practice using his own words.

i also ask DD1 to let DD2 answer (she's 14 months and doesn't actually talk yet, but she needs practice!). and then we're quiet while we wait for her "answer."

i was an older sister who told my mom that my little sister couldn't talk yet. and my mom promptly told my brother and i that she does talk, we just don't let her! :P

I tell DS to knock it off. I say that it is DD's turn to use her words and that he needs to wait for his turn to speak. We talk about how he would feel at school if his teacher asked him to do something he likes like help with the light switch and before he could do it a friend ran over and did it first.
I also sometimes try to ask DS whatever I want to ask DD and then ask DD the same thing so he has had a turn to speak. Or as I ask DD I swivel and make eye contact with DS, raise a warning eyebrow and sign 'wait, please'

What drives me really nuts is when DS will tell me that DD wants something. Inevitably we are in the car, I don't have it, she didn't want it, but now she does desperately. Ugh.

@YYCBee: my youngest talks, though not quite as well as my oldest did at this age, so I guess you're right. It's more of a manners thing than anything else and likely something that isn't harmful. I just drives me crazy sometimes!

I don't have kids, but I was a second child who didn't talk for a LONG time because my sister always spoke for me (it was to the point that my parents had me tested). Anyway, apparently when I did start talking it came out in full sentences. I also now have no problems talking and have a masters degree in accounting.

I say try not to let bug you and don't worry about it. If anything, you'll just have remind your older daughter of her manners.

Does your older LO try to speak for your younger LO? What do you do about it?

Maybe it's one of those things that annoys me that I need to just let go but I'll ask DD2 a question, like if she is finished with a meal and DD1 will answer before her sister gets a chance and it drives me crazy!
