@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: As long as you didn't light it on fire or throw it out with the garbage I think it's good! I don't think refusing delivery was bad either! Just wouldn't have probably even noticed.. our packages tend to just get brought to the front door and they ring the bell and walk away!

@2littlepumpkins: In the moment of me trying to manage four people moving me out of my house accepting something totally unexpected and that didn’t belong to me seemed like a big imposition. However, as many of you pointed out and eloquently put like @shabang: it probably was not my finest moment.

Prior to moving, we received a case of wine for the new owners. They were members of a winery or something. We just put it aside, marked it clearly, and left it for them.

At closing, they expressed their appreciation and were so pleasant that we ended up exchanging contact info and sending them some neighborhood recs and A/V assistance when they asked for it.

I feel like life is hard enough, and if it's not particularly difficult for me to make it easier on someone, I'll do it.

@misolee: true. And it does make a big difference if it was like, a comforter, vs a dresser or something.

@mrs-lemon-lime I agree. It’s technically not their house yet. You never know what can happen at a closing.

@foodnerd81 I mentioned Wayfair taking forever when ordering (like it took us 3 almost 4 weeks to get this shelf) then they must have ordered much much earlier than closing date which is kind of annoying bc it’s not their house yet. Especially since there was a week left until closing. And then usually they send shipping info once it ships so they should have gotten estimated shipping like several days in advance and figured out way to contact seller much earlier than day of or figured out a way to meet the delivery. I mean a piece of mail is no big deal but a huge furniture delivery kind of is.

My friend just closed on a house. The seller had several old appliances they wanted to take. It was also in the contract to leave the refrigerator. During the walk through the morning of, she noticed they left old appliances and took the refrig. Needless to say closing took several hours as my friend had to request money back for the refrig. After all was said and done and papers signed, the seller asked that she hold the old appliances until next weekend so he can come pick it up. She told him it was going to the curb the next day and he could pick it up from there.

@MenagerieMama: if I wasn’t already annoyed at how much stuff I had to push back on and say no to and give an explanation to my realtor who I sometimes felt was acting in the buyer’s best interests I may have kept the package and put it in the third garage and moved absolutely everything out of that garage so it would be the only thing in that garage, but I wasn’t going through that hassle while I was in the middle of working with four people packing up my belongings. The last time I bought/ sold a house I received several days heads up that a Banana Republic delivery was coming for the old owners and pick up was coordinated with their realtor. That was no biggie. I just feel like these people think this is already their house and it’s not. The buyers twice now have left paperwork in my home after a visit that I have had to trash. To me that was litter and disrespectful. I’ve had a hard time being the nice and accommodating person I generally am during this process.

@misolee: if wayfair usually takes forever and they surprised them by actually being fast, I could understand. I have had that where something isn’t supposed to come for a week comes earlier. But I suppose it depends how big and valuable it is too.

I had to put down our new address (before we closed) to get a library card in our new city while we were staying in an Airbnb (and kids weren't in daycare yet, and I was losing my marbles). They sent the permanent card to the house and the sellers kept it for us and left it on the counter when we moved it. I thought it was very kind and thoughtful. They also got a major deal selling to us in a hot market so it wasn't any skin off their back :meh:

I think if they gave you a heads up in advance and they both agreed that you weren’t responsible for the package, I might keep it.

If it’s a heads up on the day of..then no. I would refuse delivery. Good thing you were able to.

Also I’ve ordered from Wayfair couple times. It takes forever. Also they give you tracking. So they should have known it was coming early and be at the house to meet the delivery or something.

I would have put it aside. I know when we were moving, I specifically gave my daughters new preschool both our old address and new one with a specific moving date, and the preschool still sent a letter to the new address over a week before we closed. Yeah I’m sure if they had read the fine print they would have figured it out but moving is stressful and people overlook things. I probably would have put it in the garage or something with a giant sticker that said do not move.

@Sams Mom: @Mrs. Lemon-Lime: it wasn't Wayfair but I had something delivered while we were on vacation that I had specifically ordered with super slow shipping so it didn't sit on my porch and they sent it way early. Not saying that's what happened but it does happen from time to time. I think if you had had a proper heads up and it was an honest mistake I'd keep it

@Sams Mom: we get deliveries all the time and I thought it may have been something my husband ordered, but when I checked who the sender was and didn’t even see my name or his I immediately asked the FedEx driver to take it back and he did. Thank goodness my driveway is long and he hadn’t made it back to the truck. My realtor actually texted me to give me a heads up it was coming, but since this was pack day I had no clue where my phone was for half the morning. By the time I found my phone and saw the text it was too late. The text wasn’t a request to keep it- it was informing me a delivery would be made (perturbed) and it had an excuse that they planned for it to arrive after closing, which after reviewing Wayfair’s shipping policy seemed disingenuous.

Probably doesn’t help that I have been following Nancy Pelosi’s no Fs given attitude lately and just watched Amanda Seale HBO comedy special. Her catchphrase is: oh no not today. I’m not the one. :silly:

I'd contact your agent before you do anything. I think it's in poor taste; as in you know when you close, you know what shipping you're paying for/getting, you know someone still lives there...

The buyer’s don’t close on my house until early next week. Today, while movers packed up my belongings FedEx arrives with a delivery from Wayfair from the buyers. WWYD

1. Keep the delivery, stowe it somewhere safe that it won’t get broken or inadvertently get put on the moving truck?

2. Send it back to the sender since it’s not your delivery and the people’s name on the box do not own the home?
