I ask my yorkies' groomer for a scissor-clipped puppy cut. It's got the fluffiness you're talking about but its not too short! She does it with a mix of scissors and a razor with a long guard on it.

A reputable groomer should be very interested in hearing exactly what you want. We use the groomer at the doggie daycare we go to and during the summer I ask for a field cut but leave the front leg feathers about an inch long and give them cocker ears. For the winter I let the field cut grow out but keep their belly and chest trimmed high, let the leg feathers grow out and continue with cocker ears. If you have a good doggie daycare around maybe call them and ask if they have or can recommend a good groomer in your area.

@pui: Ugh! I think that site I mentioned has some certified groomers listed in Canada - they should definitely be trained and certified!

If you go to any decent groomer though, you should be able to specify something like "I want the hair to stay this long, not razor cut, the legs should look like this, face shape should look like this" etc. Every time we drop off our dog we confirm with our groomer that we want ears long, face short, body short, legs long. And scissors are a given!

@spaniellove: Unfortunately, I am in Canada, but thanks for the idea! There is probably a similar list for Canadian groomers! :)

My golden just gets trimmed...never shaved. Just tell your groomer, no shaving, just trim it up.

@pui: And he's sooo cute!! You can't have that happen. :)

When you go to the groomer, spell out exactly what you want done and NOT done. I know it sounds extremely type A, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I don't know why a groomer would use a razor to shave down every dog! Our groomer offers a partial or cleanup, which is where they actually groom the face, feet, and tail and then trim what they call the "skirt". It's probably worth it to find a very good groomer in your area; ours is a show/competition groomer and has incredible knowledge of breed-specific grooming. I found this on her site - it might be helpful? http://www.ndgaa.com/

ETA: My dog says not to judge her cut by her avatar photo; she's not looking her best there!

@littlek: Hmm that sounds like it might be what I'm looking for. I'll have to enquire at my current groomer if they do that sort of thing. I'm so afraid they're going to mess it up and ruin my poor baby's fur. :(

@pui: I have a pomeranian and I am very careful who I let groom her because they try and shave her hair and it looks bad. What we get down is a scooter cut, where they shave her belly and butt and then trim her regular fur. Is this what you are looking for? If so, you may have to do trial and error checking out local groomers.

I get my cats (persians) groomed and I specify what kind of cut and what kind of length blade I want them to use. You can definitely get a long trim and not a razor....they use electric blades with adjustable pieces at the end. I always go shorter in the summer and longer in the winter

With my old dog we used to just take him to this random groomer around the corner and they would basically just shave him down. He looked nice when it grew out slightly, a few weeks after it was cut. He was a small dog, but he had a sturdy little body so the close cut looked fine.

However, my new dog is only 7 and a half pounds and really skinny. When he gets wet and his fur sticks to his body he looks like a drowned rat lol. I'm afraid if they were to cut him close like they did with my old dog he'd look ridiculous. I've also heard that his breed's fur grows very slowly, so if I got him cut short it could be months and months before it grows out.

His fur is getting kinda long and it's getting to be more maintenance. I used to brush him around once a week, now I've been doing it 3-4 times a week because he's getting knots so easily. Also, his fur is getting weighed down by the length and he doesn't look "fluffy" like he did before. I wish I could get his hair cut back to the length it was 3 months ago, about an inch off everywhere evenly.

The thing is, I'm pretty sure the groomer I've gone to in the past just uses a razor to cut the fur short for every dog. Is there a such thing as a groomer who would kinda just trim his fur? Or does this plainly not exist?

Has anyone ever heard of anything like this?
