It is very important to us that our children learn acceptance and that differences don't make a person any less deserving of love and friendship. Growing up in a household with a mentally handicapped brother, my sisters and I certainly learned that. And while he isn't here anymore to share his love (which was unending) and help them learn that differences can be a good thing, I hope the lessons I learned can carry on through them.

Being in an interfaith relationship (I am Christian, DH is Jewish) I hope the learn acceptance and tolerance of religious beliefs and backgrounds as well which is something I feel like alot of people are missing these days.

I hope that it will not only help them to accept others but also not be afraid to be different themselves.

I want to cultivate a love for learning. I hope school/learning isn’t a chore; I hope they love it (like my husband and I both do). I also want to cultivate a sense of social responsibility. If you have more than others, it doesn’t mean you get to have all the latest and greatest; it means you have an opportunity and a responsibility to help others who are not as fortunate. Clothing/toy donation will be routine!

Also, compassion and self-reliance. My goal is to teach my daughter the same thing my mom taught me: never rely on a man; rely on YOURSELF. Support yourself, be fulfilled within yourself.

@blackbird: Yeah, I have a ton more. I just feel like those are my top two, because honestly I don't see as much kindness or patience as I would like to in the world, so I feel like it is something that is so easy to let slide and need more focus.
@tinyperson: That is the hard part, when you forget your kid is there and say something snarky. Luckily, LO isn't old enough for it to be an issue...yet.

Hmm good thread.

I want them to be compassionate, inquisitive, good eating habbits, good manners, independent, accountable, have integrity, self- control, honest, relatable, optimistic...the list goes on.

Kindness and sensitivity to others are at the top of my list - really going to be mindful of my interactions with others and to remind myself to keep any snarky comments to myself!

Oh wow, there are so many. I want them to be independent and self sufficient, caring and kind individuals, be confident enough to stand up for what they believe in/not be push overs, be considerate, be driven and not have a settling for less mentality. I want them to be fighters...not give up easily/say something is too hard and that be that.

Above all else, I really want my LO and any future kids to be patient and kind to others. I want to start early by modeling those behaviors in all interactions with them and others when they are around. As they grow older, I want to have conversations and analysis of situations where both are involved. It is hard, because patience isn't my husbands strength and I can have a mean sense of humor that comes off wrong.

What types of behaviors/values are important for you to cultivate in your LO? Do you or your SO struggle with the very thing you want to teach them?
