@andrea: Thanks Andrea. Everything else was fine but that. :( Kind of a big one though. I hope he starts speaking asap! I hear all of the cute things your daughter says and I'm dying for him to start talking!

I am glad everything else was fine at the check up. It is good to know that your DH was the same, though! So maybe he is just like daddy. :-)

@sweet t: Thanks for the links! Will definitely check them out!

@artbee: LOL! I'm a talker too but I just think he's just more of a thinker. :) My MIL said my husband didn't really start talking until 2.5 so I"m thinking maybe he's like his daddy. I was a blabber mouth so he definitely doesn't take after his mama!

He's 2 years and 8 months. We started when he was 2. That was when I started getting concerned. Also, it's free when the child is under 3 so I wanted to give it a try. Figured it can't hurt. They come and evaluate the child to see if he/she qualifies for the service. They were actually more concerned about his receptive communication more than his expressive. It's very non invasive, LO one just thinks it's play time. I would recommend getting him evaluated and see what they say.

I have a friend who's LO didn't talk very much at 2 either. She's 3 and talks much more. We think (and her mom's the one who said this) that her mom talks so much that she can't get any words in! I just feel like every kid develops at a different pace, and hopefully there's nothing to worry about. Good luck!

I don't have any experience with this but Jenna from That Wife has written about her son's speech delay and his therapy sessions. It might be helpful to you!

Here are two posts that I found but I know there are more.

My niece went to a speech therapist frequently. She didn't have trouble talking just issues enunciating properly. She's also from a dual (more like 4!) language family.
It helped her immensely! I think she went regularly for one year and stopped after that. She's a great little talker now at 8! :)
If I remember correctly she was either 3 or 4 when she started the classes. BTW she was referred to classes by her teachers (preschool so she might have been 4). Which I trust more because it's people who interact and see her regularly.

My DH was in speech therapy around age 3 because although he could say a lot of words & communicate well, my MIL could barely understand him. It really helped him & he speaks very clearly now & actually is a great public speaker.

LO is in early intervention for speech therapy currently. The therapist comes to our home once a week to work with LO. She gives us tips on how to engage and encourage him to speak. He's improved a lot since then and now we mostly work on his behavior when she comes. So it turns out that he just had a natural delay. There aren't any developmental or physical issues.

@lilteacherbee: Interesting! Glad to hear that the therapy works for those kids.

I've asked literally all of my friends with similar-aged kids and they all told me that it's normal and that their kids didn't start really talking until 2.5. So I may wait a bit. But wanted to hear from others Bees to see if anyone had any similar experiences.

Several of my pre-k students have speech therapy at school. Our therapist is great and I can tell quite a difference just in the past few months. Since they're a bit older, their therapy is more based on pronunciation, lisps, etc.

Its great that any developmental disorders were ruled out! Its also a good sign that he doesn't show signs of hearing problems.

My mom said I didn't talk much until I was two. I knew I was saying things funny and I guess didn't like to talk because of that. I didn't go to speech therapy until elementary school but then I went for a couple years. I have no idea what was wrong, my hearing is great, I just couldn't pronounce the lower half of the alphabet.

My son had his 2 year doc appointment yesterday and everything was fine...except she mentioned he had severe speech delay. :( He's 2 years old and says maybe 5 words. But he's super expressive and a great gesturer, which could be why he doesn't feel the need to talk. Plus we're a dual language family. She ruled out developmental disorders, like autism, but mentioned we might want to get his hearing checked just in case. I don't think his hearing is bad at all but we might do it as a precaution.

Anyhow, she suggested speech therapy classes for him. Have any of you taken your LO's to speech therapy class?
