DH and my mom say I drive like a Grandma. I'm ok with that. I go the speed limit, sometimes under if it's dark/snowy...but on the highway I will go a little over by about 5mph if it's going with the flow of traffic. I used to text and drive as a teenager. I can't believe I did something so stupid.

The part where he looks back at his son then the car hits him.... OMG! *bawling*

@mrs. wagon: OMG!!! YES!!!! DH texts when he drives it and drives me absolutely insane. No matter how many times I tell him not to, especially since DS is in the car, he just doesn't get it. He says he's a safe driver blah blah blah. Like you, I tell him, even if he is, others aren't. He's willing to risk our son's life bc he's too attached to his phone????? really??????????????

It's a current TV advertisement here in New Zealand, so the speed is in km. I am way paranoid these days especially with lo in the car and it scares me everyday to see so many drivers taking stupid risks. Using phones while driving is illegal here.

@bluestriped bee: I agree that I don't really get why ppl get pissed off about talking on the phone and driving. It is no more distracting than talking to someone in the back seat. Also I don't really care about people texting at stoplights or whatever. Sort of annoying if they aren't paying attention and don't go on green, but the people driving and clearly not looking at the road are the ones who annoy me. But then again I also got annoyed the other day when I saw a guy driving down a busy road with a cheeseburger in one hand and a pop in the other. No hands for the wheel, dude! lol

@bluestriped bee: point taken, you're absolutely right that people do too many dangerous things while driving. I don't think most people are honest and speak the real truth though, when it comes to those things.

At the end of the day, all that stuff can wait. I really have no patience for people that text while at stop lights or what have you, because those are critical times when traffic patterns change and you really should pay attention, especially when that last driver tries to squeak through the yellow light.

@Mae: Agreed.

I think there is a difference between defensive driving and reckless driving. Someone can be going 10 miles under the speed limit on the highway and I consider that reckless. I consider myself a defensive driver and yes, I speed. I do it safely. (Yeah, I'm not perfect and I make mistakes. Luckily no tickets or accidents for the past 10 year. *knock on wood*) Yes, there are stupid drivers (usually young) out there that speed and weave in an out of traffic.

Very powerful video but I know as a defensive driver, I would have seen how fast he was going and I wouldn't have pulled out. Although, if there was a blind curve, I wouldn't have been able to and I could have been in been in an accident like this. Also, if I was the one speeding, I would probably slow down just in case the car were to pull out. Defensive driving... thinking of all the possibilities to avoid an accident.

But going 100 mph is way too fast and especially with a kid. Though was it 100 KPH? since the guys had an accent and maybe they were in another country. (I just looked it up 100 kph is 62 mph.) That can be fast considering if the roads are windy and in a residential area. But, I think we've all driven 62 mph at some point in the car.

The one thing I am annoyed with is people who get all pissed off about people texting and talking using their phones. (Which is dangerous and I don't do it. Well, I text at stop lights but look up every second to make sure I don't hold up traffic. I, also, have a handsfree bluetooth headset in my car, if I need to call someone.) But in the same breath, they might be the ones who eat, apply makeup, read and the list of other things that cause distracted driving. Even having friends, family and kids in the back seat could result in distracted driving. I could be arguing with the DH in the passenger seat and that's considered distracted driving.

I think we should have an emphasis on distracted driving and defensive driving. Also, sadly, accidents happen even if we are 'perfect' drivers.

ETA: The one thing that I am looking forward to is when computers drive our cars and we don't have to. Cars can speak to each other and hopefully prevent accidents. :) Take the human error out of the equation. (Yeah, I watch too many futuristic movies.)

@Adira: I get that. But as a gut reaction thing, I don't feel nearly as badly for someone who does something stupid as I do for someone who did nothing wrong. Like if the speeding guy had come around the corner to find a school bus stopped picking up kids--- that is a more powerful commercial because the only person doing anything wrong is the speeding guy. But when someone else does something really stupid like pulling out in front of a car, its just hard for me to feel as strongly about that because "mistakes" like that are so preventable.

A big peeve of mine is people speeding in residential areas. Almost every day I have someone who likes to drive really close to my bumper because they're too impatient. I will never understand aggressive driving.

@Mae: I think that was what they were saying about "other people make mistakes." The guy that pulled out in front of the car thinking he had enough time - he was making a mistake, which is why it's important for the other guy not to be speeding because he may have had time to stop if he wasn't.

I'm paranoid though - if there's a car within 100 miles of me, I'm not pulling out!!

Very sad commercial. And there is no excuse for ever going that fast. But how does guy 1 pull out in front of a car?!?! Seems like a better commercial for paying attention and not making stupid driving decisions like trying to pull out in front of a car. ESPECIALLY when you have your kid in the back.

Wagon Sr. and I have so many fights about driving. I keep trying to explain to him that it doesn't matter how good of a driver he is, other people are always messing up and he can't control or predict what they're gonna do. Speeding is a no brainer. Even if you're not speeding, something like this could happen, so why not eliminate one thing that would only save you a few minutes anyway???
