It always never hurts to show up at court. Most times they will either take off point(s) (depending on where you live) or reduce your ticket amount or both. I went 17 over (20 over is considered wreck-less driving and really bad) once and went to court and got both reduced but still had to pay the court fees. End up paying a little over $100 (b/c court fees were like $60 something). I would have paid a lot more had I not gone. It just sucks to have to go there and confront the cop who pulled you over. If you're lucky, he/she doesn't show up! Mine did. Grr... Haha!

Oh, and depending on where you live, you can get points taken off by going to traffic school. I know they do that in CA from when I lived there before. Depending on how many points you get it could go back to your insurance and then your premiums might go up. I live in VA now and the laws are a little different here. We actually have good driving records (1 point for every year you don't get a ticket) so I was lucky that I had enough good driving points that brought me back down to zero where I want to be at.

Good luck!

I have gotten, well, a lot of speeding tickets. but none of them have ever showed up on my record - I've either done defensive driving or deferred adjudication. I personally have never gone to court to contest one, but I have lots of friends that have & have been successful. that's the only law breaking I do though, promise. I'm in TX, so I'm not sure how the laws here vary from where you are

@chopsuey119: I'm not sure about where you live, but can you take Defensive Driving and have it taken off your record? That's what we do here if you haven't had a ticket in while, so that it stays off your record and your insurance doesn't go up.

ugh. i got 2 speeding tickets and i fought them both. 1 with a lawyer (that was my first, and it was reckless, since anything over 80 in va is reckless) and they reduced it to the minimum. the other one, the cop says he was pacing me. jerk. i contested that i was speeding but not as fast as he said. i should have known i'd lose. ugh.

Psht fight it! It will be reduced regardless. Plus if the cop doesn't show up/send a report you get off with no ticket at all. I've fought every single one Ive gotten and they have been reduced or dropped every single time.

I only got a speeding ticket once but it was out of state so I just paid for it. But if it's not too out of the way, I would fight it just to reduce the points. Not sure how long they stay on your record.

I'm in NY (upstate) and generally if you plead not guilty and get an appearance date, the district attorney will meet with you and offer you a plea bargain. Usually they'll reduce it some, depending on your record. They are typically more interested in the fines, than the points on your record, so you can usually get a lower offense (fewer or no points) and just pay a bit more. If it's local, it generally seems like it's worth it to at least plead not guilty and show up, rather than just pay through the mail.

I've gotten one, and it was a really messed up situation. I actually was speeding a little (70 on a 65), but when the cop pulled me over he told me that I had been going 80, pretended to exit at X street to try to lose him then got back on and started going 70. I told him that couldn't possibly have been me and that he had mistaken me for someone else. He asked me if I thought he was stupid and called me a liar trying to worm my way out of a ticket. I explained that I had gotten on the freeway two entrances after the one that he said I pretended to exit on. He said, "Okay, I'll just write that you sped from that street on your ticket then." I cried all the way home because he was so mean.

I didn't contest it though because I really just didn't want to see him again. I paid and did online traffic school to keep it off my record.

FIGHT IT, FIGHT IT, FIGHT IT!!! I just got my first speeding ticket this summer actually......79 in a 55....don't ask....I was being reckless....but i went to court and "fought it" I really didnt have to do anything, but pretty much since I showed up....instead of it taking like 6 points away, they reduced it to no points (that way my insurance wasn't affected) but I ended up having to pay more (I payed $400 in total) but it was totally worth it because my insurance didn't find out. They changed my speeding ticket actually to "Improper Parking"

DH just got one, and we paid it b/c then you have an option to do online traffic school and get it removed from your driving record. The clean driving record was worth more to us than the cost of the ticket...

I've gotten one...I totally deserved it too. But since it was my first I went and used my good driver's record so I didn't have to pay. It clears every three years (at least here in RI and MA I believe). My friend used her good driver's record as well. The only thing I had to pay was the court fee. Good luck!

When I got my one and only speeding ticket, everyone told me to fight it no matter what because if you show up they will usually reduce it to $89. When I got there I was so nervous but the cop didn't show and everyone got their tickets reduced to $89... except for one guy who brought all this evidence and fought his case with all this complex stuff (I think he was an aspiring lawyer) and his got reduced to $99. On the other hand I have fought driving with an expired license (long story but I had just gotten a new license with my married name and my birthday was a couple of months later and I never got a notice in the mail to renew it - I didn't check my license to see if it expired because I had just gotten it (why wouldn't they have renewed it when I changed my name I have no idea)- they bumped the ticket down to a non-moving violation).
