@hilsy85: oh no! I hope he grows out of it eventually, cinnamon is in so many things!

@Mrs. D: that's so nice of you!

Ugh. So this happened again today, and there wasn't a spice in sight. The poor kid got hives on both cheeks and on his hands, and his fingers actually swelled up. The only things he had both times are apple and boiled egg... and he barely even ate the egg today, just held it for a few minutes and took one bite. He's never had reactions to those before. I'm stumped :( It didn't seem to bother him any, but I know allergies can get worse the more you're exposed to an allergen... if this keeps happening, he'll be going to the doctor for allergy testing.

One of the teachers at my first job had a LONG list of allergies, including tons of spices. We used a lot of Garlic that year so she wouldn't feel left out, not that she asked us too, we just wanted her to be able to come to potlucks.

LO has a cinnamon allergy/sensitivity--if it touches his face, he gets red blotches. HOwever, it doesn't affect anything else, so his pedi said he's fine to have it. I just try not to let the spice touch his face too much.

@jhd: @anonysquire: @cheesetomywhine: @mrs. bird: so it could be the cinnamon, I guess! I feel like he's had it before in apple pie, but I'll watch him extra carefully the next time he has any! Hopefully he'll grow out of this :)

@erinpye: yikes! I'll keep an eye out for the paprika too. There definitely wasn't any dye in the soups, but that's good to know.

Could be! I can eat cinnamon, but I can't have it on my skin or in my toothpaste. Once in college I bought cinnamon toms of main toothpaste and my mouth blew up like a pufferfish.

My oldest used to have contact reaction/allergy to cinnamon. It went away as she got older. Her pedi wasn't concerned as it disappeared quickly and lo wasn't bothered by it.

My mom reacts to paprika, so yeah- it can happen. Also, sometimes food dyes cause reactions in kids- especially red dye.

Yes!! Zuma had a pumpkin bundt with cinnamon and has had pumpkin before with no results but the cinnamon caused a red rash all over her cheeks.

I am sensitive to cinnamon so it's definitely possible! It popped up on an allergy test I had years ago and I seem to be more and more sensitive to it. Drives me crazy to smell it everywhere at holiday time.

Is there such a thing? DS had pumpkin soup twice recently. Both times he got a rash on his face afterward. He's had other squash-type things before, so I think he might be reacting to cinnamon or allspice or something, not the pumpkin itself.

On the upside, he's over all that pickiness and he's actually eating veggies that he used to hate. Yay! But now I feel bad that I must have fed him something that makes him break out.
