@wrkbrk: I tried to do laundry just on weekends but it got too crazy with 4 people in the house, so now I set the washer and dryer up after bath time, and I run it on a timer through the night. clothes are washed and ready for hanging/drying in the morning before we have to leave, and I deal with them once I'm home in the afternoon or evening. same story with dishwasher running on timer. if you could swing the extra $$ for cleaner once a week you might have less pressure to do the extra cleaning on a weekend. I wish I had a cleaner, but I can imagine that in my paranoia I would be cleaning before the cleaner got here!!

So when I was working FT, I usually had the kids to myself all weekend except maybe at nights. Saturdays were usually the days there were things like picnics/events/bdays/etc scheduled but it was usually in the afternoons so we did laundry Sat mornings and then whatever in the afternoons and then if DH was home that night after the kids went to bed that's when I did my solo grocery run.

Sundays were usually park days and leftover/misc chores/bill paying/etc.

Cleaning we did have a cleaning lady 2x/month and the rest of it we did nightly regardless of whether it was weekday or weeknight.

I think the one thing that helped was doing errands solo after kids were in bed. And if I remember right it was something suggested on here. :)

@FannyMae: We do* need our cleaning lady to come once a week ... right now it's every other week. This would really help I think if just bit the bullet and paid for it!!!!

Our weekends kind of go like this -
Saturday:
730 - kids & hubby are up, I try get a *tiny* sleep in, and then we have quick brekky/coffee and hubby leaves for work before 9.
9-12 - I just try to get as much done around the house with both kids creating chaos. laundry, beds, tidying up random messes, dishes & dishwasher etc.
after 12 - hubby gets home and if we are lucky gets changed quickly and we head out for lunch/quick easy errands, random fun stuff that might be on around town.
if we are home by late afternoon (and LO has had a car nap) I will continue with whatever housework needs to be done, get dinner ready and let the kids play. they start to get rowdy and over tired by 7 and it gets hectic!
saturday night - movie, relaxation, snacking and general slothing!

sunday - hubby is up with both girls so I can have a small sleep in, and then again will get some random housework done, and then try to leave the house by 11am for any adventures about town, sprinkled with errands. we might have dinner with my mum, otherwise its cooking late afternoon and play time around the house, go for a long walk, go to the park etc.

the only thing I can suggest to try free up time on the weekend is sneaking in errands during the week, online grocery shopping, maybe getting a cleaner in one day a week to plough through some of the chores that might get left for the weekend? I try to do the major chores after the kids are asleep, but it leaves little time for weeknight relaxation. I end up doing stacks of "life admin" on weeknights for ourselves and my mum (and some volunteer work).

I feel like I've got it pretty easy. DH has Fri off so he does laundry and cleans the house that day (if we'll have company over the weekend). I try to run any kid free personal errands after work on Friday because it's my one chance to skip pick up/drop off for the week. Today it was buying shoes for an interview next week. Friday night I try to pack the daycare and preschool bags for Monday morning.

Saturday's & Sundays are the same. The kids are up by 6. I play with them and then video chat with grandparents until 8:30. That's DH mutually agreed upon max sleep in time. Then we eat breakfast and figure out our day. We always do a morning outing (hike, nature center, zoo, etc) until lunch time. Then we come home for naps by 1pm. The kids nap 1-2:30/3ish. Quite often DD plays until 3 and then falls asleep until 5. When we have the opportunity DH & I DTD because I'm always too tired after bedtime. I try to catch a nap after that and DH plays video games. After nap we stay close to home. Play in the yard or neighborhood. I cook dinner, we eat and go to bed.

I think about spending more time meal prepping on the weekend but I'm enjoying the chillness of our weekends now.

I grocery shop on Friday. Saturday right now is T-ball game then pool or other family fun time/see friends or birthday party or whatever. Dinner usually out with family or friends. Sunday is also just fun for most of the day but I need a couple hours in the afternoon to make lunches for the week and fold laundry. We usually eat dinner at home Sunday evening.

We don't have a set structure, because we tend to have a lot of birthday parties at different times, but we clean house and grocery shop every weekend. Also grocery shop during the week, stopping on my way home from work. I regularly go to like 4 supermarkets for groceries each week.

I also try to get my husband to do some food prep with me on weekends, plus LO1 has ballet on Saturdays.

For fun, we usually go for a family bike ride, out to the parks, somewhere. At least 1 fun family outing a weekend.

And we squeeze in seeing friends.

Saturday mornings and Sunday evenings are for errands and everything in between are for family time, kids activities and some adult alone time. Some weekends are busier than others depending on what's on the social calendar.

Saturday is family day. We wake up slowly, eat breakfast and then get dressed. We usually do some kind of outing in the morning. Recently we did strawberry picking, a local honey festival, a mall a little ways away that had a carousel and train ride on top of a playground. Then we eat lunch and boys go down for nap. Most Saturdays DH and I sleep then too - we call it Family Nap. We either have friends come over for dinner Saturday night or we go out to eat somewhere, usually capped with ice cream. Then it's baths and bedtime.

Saturday nights DH and I may do some chores and errands once the boys are in bed.

Sundays we have breakfast and go to church. We do lunch and nap and sometimes DH and I nap then too. I usually have leftovers or something in the crockpot for dinner, so DH takes the boys out in the yard to play and drag the garbage to the curb while I pack lunches and get daycare bags together. We eat dinner, play, bath and bedtime. DH and I usually work or do chores in the evenings too. We aren't really watch TV together people so he usually goes into his home office and works and I go wander Target or something.

I usually do grocery shopping during the week and meal plan so that most weekend meals are eaten out or leftovers. We do a lot of laundry on the weekend but fold and do all that stuff at night when the kids are asleep. We run the Roomba most evenings and DH does the dishes 7 nights a week and we have housecleaners twice a month, so the cleaning aspect is super minimal on the weekends.

DH works on the road a lot so it's not unusual for him to be gone up to 3 nights a week- so weekend time is nucular family time. My Mom is retired so it's rare we even see her unless we are going out with friends and she's watching DD- usually she comes and watches T while I work 1-2 nights a week.

It's a good mix of fun friend commitments like brunch or birthday parties and hanging out in our walkable neighborhood. We have a boat so that's mixed in during the summers. T still naps 2 hours a day so it's usually split into Sat AM/PM and Sun AM/PM- so 4 different activities. I'm a photographer so lately I've had some photo shoots on the weekends but I try to not be gone for more that 3 hours in one chunk. However 2 weekends ago I had 2 shoots back to back Sat afternoon/evening then a Sunday afternoon shoot- it's not ideal but then DH and DD get to hang. DH would only like me working 2 weekend days a month so I'm consolidating and doing 1 mini shoot day a month.

We get most chores done during the week. I love grocery pick up (so convenient) and only go to Costco every 6 weeks or so (usually on a weeknight). I do laundry during the week and fold while DD is bed watching a show. It's our first year having a teen mow our lawn and that was DHs biggest chore.

The struggle is real over here too. I guess maybe it just takes us longer to get household stuff done, because I feel like a lot of the time frames mentioned here isn't enough time.

During the week, DS is usually down at 7pm. We both work FT so by that point, I've been going for 13+ hours and NEED a break. 7-7:30 DH and I usually sit on the couch and watch a little TV, eat dinner. Then 7:30-9 is cleanup time - dishes, pack lunches, clean up a little. Even with that, my house is a DISASTER. Basically, packing lunches and dishes is about all that gets done.

I always aim to get some cleaning done Friday night after DS's bedtime, but by that point I am shot and really want a night off! So sometimes I will clean a bathroom, but sometimes DH and I just veg together and relax.

Saturdays: grocery store. Sometimes all 3 of us go, sometimes just me. I hate leaving DS since he's in daycare all week, but shopping with him is difficult at this age (wants to run, knock things over, won't sit in the cart, etc). So I try to go early, then play the rest of the morning - walk to the park or whatever. During naptime, do some cleaning. Laundry is going all day long.

Sundays is church in the morning, then nap for DS.

I just feel like I am so behind and my house is a wreck, and the only way to stay semi caught up is to work myself to death doing housework on the weekends. And forget cooking!

Fortunately for us, DH essentially works for himself, so he does grocery shopping during the week and cab run any errands. For me, Target is a few blocks from work so between Target, ordering from Target.com and Amazon Prime, I cover all household essentials/baby supplies. All our medical appts are also during the week.

So the whole weekend is essentially family time, with church being from 9am-11am on Sundays.

I also try to spread out the chores to do during the week or do them at night on the weekends also.

Our weekends have similar routines - Summer they change a little bit as DH golfs every saturday morning and we dont need to work so hard to come up with out of the house activities...

Saturday (DH is gone golfing from 7:30am-1/2pm)
7am kids are up - relax/play until breakfast
8-8:30am...kids eat, I cook/prep food/clean kitchen/etc
9/10 - I aim to get the kids out of the house for something little (walk around the neighborhood, nature center, park). Usually just a 1-1.5hr trip.
Noon - lunch
12:30-2:30 nap time (sometimes DD2 naps longer) I focus on picking up, showering, cooking/food prepping)
Afternoon is a family activity...zoo, park, pool, etc...
5:30-6:30 - dinner time
7/7:30 bedtime routines start

Sunday...Looks a lot like Saturday...one smaller outing and one bigger one...or sometimes we skip the smaller outing and do a craft. Some times the activity/outing is in the yard (i.e. planting flowers).

If our days are tight I will order all the groceries (except meat - I still visit the meat counter bc I like to pick my own meat - and pick them up. It cuts down the time of my grocery shopping immensely.

Haha, we don't schedule the weekends, particularly in the summer. Any day that is sunny is an automatic pool day in our backyard.

Basically, the last place you will find me on the weekends is out in public, in any place where there will be a ton of people. I loathe crowds. The only shopping I do in an actual store is groceries, and I do that super early on Sunday morning.

We have a weekend routine that has been working for us for the past couple months:
Saturday (chores/errands)
-Wake up around 6-7 and have breakfast and make our menu and grocery list for the week
-grocery shop and run errands from 9-11ish
-lunch at 1130
-nap from 12-2/230 (DH and I spend time together)
-sweep, vacuum, and steam mop and clean bathroom after nap while DH plays with DS (eta: we live in a 1200 sq ft apartment, so it's quick to get everything done)
-DH makes dinner and I play with DS and go to the park or on a walk or sometimes we hang with friends instead
-eat around 6
-DS asleep by 7

Sunday (fun/relax)
-wake up around 6/7 and eat breakfast
- head out to The zoo, aboretum or other fun activity
-home by 11 for lunch
-nap from 12-2/230 (DH and I spend time together)
-play date or hang with friends in the afternoon
-home to make dinner
-DS asleep by 7

We straighten up every night after DS goes to bed(dishes, sweep kitchen & around table, put toys away) and get stuff prepped for the next morning. We are on the couch by 730/8. I do laundry almost every single day becuse smaller, more frequent loads are easier for me to manage and we cloth diaper. I also work a later schedule on Wednesdays from 11-730, so I usually run the vacuum and do another chore, like clean the tub or change the sheets, Wednesday mornings as well. DH is amazing and does all the cooking and dishes and I take care of the laundry and other cleaning. We both straighten up as needed.

Eta: apparently I like to write novels!

My husband works from 3pm-12am so he does all the grocery shopping during the week and gets yard work done during our daughter's nap time.
I keep up with the dishes, laundry and general "picking up" of the house in the evenings.
Since we take care of most of the time-consuming stuff during the week, our weekends are free to do whatever we want (usually).

One thing we found super helpful was doing our food shopping online and picking it up Friday after work. We never cook on Fridays and typically Saturday to incorporate some fun dinnertime with kids. We try to get out of the house SUPER early on Saturdays if errands have to be done that way we can be home by 12 to do whatever we want. If errands don't have to be done we will wake up early to do any simple cleaning and by done by 12. THENNNN it's game time. We have from Saturday after 12 and on to do whatever we want to do.

We break it up by day when we can. Friday after DD goes to bed we clean the house. So that's done. Saturday is errands/productive day. House projects, shopping, etc. Sunday is family fun day or relax day. We go for a walk, to the park, or have a fun activity at home or just relax and make a nice dinner together.

For us Saturday is family day. We don't do any chores on that day. I go grocery shopping first thing Sunday morning while everyone else is at church. It's always empty so it's quick and easy. I usually go by myself but occasionally take LO. DH works from home 2-3 days a week so he does our laundry on one of those days. I will usually do a couple of loads of laundry on Sunday (LO's stuff and towels or sheets). We have cleaning people who come every other week so the cleaning on the weekend is pretty minimal (mostly sweeping, vacuuming, wiping down counter tops).

We struggle with this some. Usually our to-do list is limited to grocery shopping, laundry and maybe one other household to-do. We try to hang at home as much as we can for the kids (plus we are homebodies). Sometimes their "outing" for the day is to go grocery shopping with us.

The SAHM and Summer Days threads got me thinking.

DW and I both work FT. She works from home about half the time and I work out of the house all the time. COme weekends, we are both rushing around to get all our necessary errands done (dragging DS with us), trying to see friends, trying to plan quality family activities, trying to rest, and occasionally having to work!

Suffice it to say it's not been doable for us so far .... :P

I would love some tips on how you structure your weekend time to get the most out of it, be it relaxing, productivity, family time, or whatever you value the most!
