I have a car seat mirror and I see LO the whole time I am driving, so I don't see how I could forget him because of the mirror.

My phone alarm goes off at 8:05am every morning with the label "Where's Truett?" That's about the time I get into work and get settled in.

A mandatory car feature should be a thing though.

It should be similar to the seat belt light / annoying noise for passengers that don't wear seat belts in the front seat.

I don't think it would be that hard to put a weight meter in the back seats and have an annoying noise to say hey something in your back seat... check it out!

I just read about keeping a teddy bear buckled into your car seat and when your LO is in the car seat, you put the bear in your passenger seat. That way you always remember.

http://www.pennypinchinmom.com/safety-tip-use-stuffed-animal-never-forget-child/

Not sure if you want to be hassled with remembering the teddy bear but maybe if you get into a habit of checking the bear, it could work.

I don't see any harm in making it mandatory. Also it seems cars could be designed with better airflow so they don't instantly turn into greenhouses.

i don't know that I would buy a device - you've got to remember to use it -- but I have tried to "anchor" the action of checking the seat when I put my car in park.

The routine goes Park->check seat->open back door before I even leave my seat. (minivan FTW)

I'm in favor of a system that requires the user to do an action every time to check/confirm that the child hasn't been left in the seat. It's just too easy to get used to the beeping!

In my current brain fog I could easily see myself walking away and forgetting the baby, plus I already have too many things to figure out so it would be helpful if this was a mandatory feature on new car seats.

This could be so useful to so many people, parents, grandparents, etc. I firmly believe things like this happen to the most vigiliant of parents, so why not? Let's think about it, at one point, seat belts didn't even exist in cars.

I absolutely think it should be mandatory. @NovBaby1112: exactly this. To me, it's no different from any other safety feature.

That article is one I have read several times, and it breaks my hear every time. To think that some small device could have prevented those tragedies from occurring....

Wow! Such a powerful article! Thanks for sharing. I don't know if I've made up my mind on whether or not it should be mandatory. I know there's always politics involved in. In a perfect world, it should be mandatory. I would definitely buy an add-on.

I haven't read the article but I voted yes it should be mandatory to get a device... it is probably not necessary for 99% of people, but if there are still 40 babies/ toddlers died each year because of this, something should be done.

Again, I haven't read the article.... I am just very upset that this is still happening to so many babies.

I do not think it should be mandatory. I think many parents could make due with a texting system (like mom always texts dad every morning to remind him to drop off LO at daycare), or a cell phone alarm to remind a parent, or some other strategy. I wouldn't want to add an additional financial burden to all parents by making this mandatory (assuming this would probably not be cheap technology to include in a carseat especially if it's mandatory, and lots of people would end up having to spend $$$ replacing a carseat they maybe only bought less than a year ago).

I would consider buying a product to add on though!

@keepcalmcarrie: I guess with that I worry that people would just get used to the beeping and not be phased by it. One of my friends posted this link on FB the other day and I thought it was awesome! But it's something people would have to be willing to use, not an automatic feature obviously since it's not really a feature. But it's still great, and anyone could afford it! (Whoops, we crossposted!) http://www.wkrn.com/story/22872890/local-boy-invents-device-to-stop-children-being-left-in-hot-cars

I just keep thinking about how one little sound could have jolted these parents into remembering the child in the back - a cry or a clap or a sneeze. A few beeps could save babies, I hope something gets introduced.

(I liked the kid's invention that was posted here the other day, the DIY rubber band chain thing, but I don't think most people are going to take the time to make that or use it).

@lawbee11: Just thinking out loud here - I wonder if it could be required as a feature of new vehicles instead? Like a weight sensor for any back seats that would just issue a few beeps when you turn off the ignition? In the case of a car seat, it would go off every time you turn off the car - which is exactly what you want anyway. And once your kids are older, it won't go off if no one is in the back seat. I thought @NovBaby1112:'s point about seat belts for front adults was so good.

A change to vehicles rather than car seats would take longer to roll out because people often replace car seats more often than cars, but it would help and seems like it would be an easy/cheap feature for car companies. And for anyone with older cars who didn't want to buy a more expensive car seat, a separate cheap device would work too.

The more I think about it, the more I believe SOMETHING should be mandatory - for new cars or car seats.

I think at a minimum it should be available as an optional purchase. Adding it on as mandatory could significantly increase the price of car seats which I don't think is fair to those that are already struggling to afford car seats.

There is a key fob device that has one section on your keys, and one on the backseat that you click after you remove your baby. We almost bought it because this is always, always on my mind.

@loveisstrange: Yes.

One of DH's friends forgot their infant daughter in the backseat. He was rushing to a meeting at his work, and forgot to bring her inside - her daycare was located on-site at his work. She died, and this has been one of my greatest fears since it happened 7 years ago. Its the reason we don't allow our nanny to drive my son anywhere unless its an emergency. I have a crippling fear of this, especially because its so hot where we live.

I think it's a great product, but not necessarily required. I have already put habits in place to prevent this. I keep my purse & lunch in the backseat on the floor, so by having to open the door in the back to grab my purse before going into work I see her car seat. It's never happened to me (we talk the whole way to daycare/work) but the fear is always in my head.

The times that concern me more are when we mess with the schedule and DH takes her to daycare or picks her up. I always make sure I call to check in. He thinks it's annoying, but it's not part of his routine like it is mine, it would be easier to forget!

@2PeasinaPod: I'm very scatterbrained too, which is why I think I'm so afraid of this.

@Mama Bird: @MrsKoala: Right, I understand the marketing obstacle for something like this as separate baby gear - like, "why would I need to buy that, I could never forget my baby." I'd be very interested in the NASA device as well.

@NovBaby1112: I know, that's the craziest part. The beeping is nonstop if drivers or front seat passengers don't buckle their seat belts (and rightly so). In newer cars, the headlights turn off automatically, and in older ones, again with the beeping... so I don't understand why child safety prevention like this doesn't get more attention or legislative support. Yeah, 15-25 cases of this per year makes it very rare, but that's 15-25 too many and they are just such horrible tragedies...

@HeartAbandoned: those are really good ideas, thanks!

Part of me thinks that it shouldn't be mandatory... but then you never think that this will happen to you, so maybe it should. :/

Totally would buy it. I'm leaning towards saying yes to requiring it, because usually the people that end up doing this are the same people that would say, "OMG what a piece of shit parent, how can you forget your baby in the car?" You can't be protected against something if you naively believe it could never happen to you. It could happen to anyone who doesn't safeguard against it when you're tired, thrown off your normal schedule, on autopilot, etc.

I always leave my purse in the backseat with LO as a reminder.
