right now, we're both saving for retirement, but i'll be a SAHM soon, so maybe i'll just contribute to my IRA or something. hubby will probably keep his stuff the same. right now, the markets suck so bad, i feel like i'm throwing money out the window.

When I had a job, I was saving for retirement. Since I lost my job, I'm not anymore. My DH's job doesn't offer any type of retirement, so he isn't, although I try to tell him to start his own.

We both put about 10-15% away in our 401Ks and max out our IRAs annually. We've been able to build monthly savings without having to change our retirement plan so once babies are here, the plan is to dip into the monthly savings pile as needed if we are short with monthly spending money. We will do our best not to change our retirement plans from now.

Not yet. Hubs' work is about to start a 401(k) program that he will participate in, and my last job had one so I have a little saved, but that's it at this point.

We put in a significant amount of my husband's pay into a 401k which is matched by his employer. Also, since most of our living expenses are paid for by his employer, while we are living abroad,we are able to send money back to our bank accounts in the States, which we don't spend.

We are very well invested in our retirement. Both of us put the max we are allowed into our 401k's every year as well as money into our IRA's. We also have already started college funds for the 4yr old and will start another as soon as the next one is born. If all goes well we should be all set!

I save 10% (company matches 6%) of my salary to my 401k, I'm not sure off the top of my head how much my husband saves but its probably roughly the same amount. I don't plan on reducing this once we have a child, I sort of try to "forget" about it, so I don't view it as money I can access or reduce, if that makes sense.

We also currently are saving to buy investment property (an apartment building), which will be paid off before we retire and which should provide additional retirement income. When we have to start paying for daycare, we will likely have to save less towards this goal, so I'm trying to maximize what I save now (sometimes that works, sometimes that doesn't!)

Let's see, I have a 401k, that I put only 6% in because that was the amount my company matched. I also had a stock purchase plan, but all my options for that are completely worthless, and the value has really taken a nosedive since the 2007.
I recently got a letter from my former employer informing me of my payout for my pension...I started working in 1997 and then the company stopped the pension later that year. I am entitled to a whopping $197. So yeah, the focus needs to be on our retirement, and I don't consider owning your home to be retirement savings.

We have our 401ks too which is what we're counting on for retirement. It'd be nice to also have some expendable cash lying around for some pre-retirement fun (travel!).

@Andrea: my grandparents were able to pay for my college so I, too, feel very fortunate. If I had school loans to pay for (on top of all of the bills we have now), I don't know how we'd make it.

We have our 401k's and IRA's but they haven't exactly been making any money recently. I know theoretically they are long term investments and should go up over time but we've seen many stories of retirement savings being wiped out recently.

Plus, with college education costs skyrocketing, I would like to be able to save for that, too, but it is hard to have your regular savings buffer, retirement savings, and college savings. I know there is nothing wrong with school loans but it was REALLY nice that my parents were able to pay for my college so that I was not saddled with any debt once I graduated and was able to start saving money right away once I got a job. So much to think about!!

For those of you with one or more children, are you still able to save money for retirement? I know we have the other post open about saving money but I'd like to go one further and see if people are able to save for retirement when they have kids.

We currently each save 15% of our salaries in our 401k's and we put the max into our IRA's each year. We don't get stock options at our companies, but we have small stocks here and there. Once we have a baby, we are not changing our retirement savings plan (unless I go PT, then I will put mine off for a year). With saving that much for retirement, we won't have a lot to put into savings (if any), but at least we're planning for our future. That is more important to us than having a ton of children.
