I found when people ask, it's usually because they aren't familiar with the new recs. I get a lot of questions from my MIL because my SIL turned all 3 of her kids at 1 year.

My parents are cool with it, I actually remember the car seats that were used back in the day, and even my mom says she doesn't know how we stayed safe in those things...she's supportive of extended rear facing now.

A few people comment about her legs... I guess that's just the first thing that "looks different" about it. Even I had that concern too, at first, until I read about it more. but I just try to brush off the comments with, "she's much safer this way"...

With family, I don't think they mean to be critical, but they just don't get it. It's been like that with a lot of things - nursing, introducing solids, how we put him to sleep, etc...

@artbee: Was going to say the same thing! Why do people think it is any of their business and why do they think it is appropriate to comment? You can bet they didn't enjoy people butting into their child rearing decisions "back in the day". Anyway, back in the day people didn't wear seat belts and women smoked when pregnant so it wasn't all rainbows and sunshine. Sorry, rant over.

Weird, why would people comment on something that you're doing to keep your child safe?

For those of you who are keeping your kids rear facing past the 20lb/1 year law, are you getting comments from people?

Several of my family members have made comments about the fact that we are keeping DS rear facing as long as possible. A lot of "back in the day..." type comments.

At least for now I can say that the recommendations are until 2, but we plan to keep him rear facing until he hits the 40lb mark, so I know we'll be dealing with these types of comments even more when we get to 2/3 years!
