@mrscheesefries: Ok, that's muuuuch better. We're getting her retested every year til she's about 5 so see if anything changes. Glad the shots worked for you :)

Food allergies: I was diagnosed at 8 and then retested at 13 and they had all cleared. My allergist said that it can happen with puberty and I was a classic example. Hazelnuts still give me hives, but they are easy to avoid. No Nutella for me, womp womp.

Airborne allergies: I got shots for these, and very aggressive treatment. When I first started, we're talking 2 shots in each arm 2 times a week. The dose was lowered over the next 10 years until my sr year in high school. Then I was retested with mild to no reactions before I left for school. I am lucky to barely get hay fever symptoms now as an adult, so the shots really worked.

As a side effect, I am really good with needles now. :)

@artbee: An allergist can test you either with a scratch/prick test on your skin or by testing your blood against allergens. Definitely not safe to test by eating.

@mrscheesefries: So glad to hear that it's possible to outgrow severe allergies but damn, 29? That's a long time.

I actually didn't have any allergies 'til I started high school. I should go get re-tested to see if any of them has gone away.

How do you find out that you're not allergic anymore? I'd be scared to test it and eat the foods!

i'm hoping mine will! he was tested at about 6 months (early to test but he had terrible ezcema so they ordered a skin prick test and a blood panel) and found to be allergic to cow's milk, peanuts, walnuts, cantaloupe and eggs. now he's 16 months and we're trying to slowly test him on those foods to see if he's outgrowing. it's been hit or miss so far, he can tolerate a bit of milk or egg in cooked foods but if he eats too much he will vomit and his skin will react. i hope he outgrows them soon but i'm grateful his reactions are just vomiting and rashes rather than more dangerous ones.

I did! I had horrible allergies as a child - pets, dust, grass, chocolate, eggs, berries, tree nuts, etc etc etc.

I had shots for the airborne allergies from age 8 until I left for college and have no sign of them now (age 29). I outgrew all food allergies except for a mild reaction to hazelnuts.

I feel very lucky. Adult-onset allergies tend to be more severe, whereas childhood allergies can go away with time and treatment.

@Rubies: Isn't it interesting how the body works? I actually noticed that I no longer had allergic reactions to mangoes post-pregnancy.

@MH.Abroad: Interesting, I'll ask my allergist about that.

@yoursilverlining: I'm crossing my fingers that my LO outgrows at least some of hers. Unfortunately, her most severe one is peanuts and that almost never goes away. :(

BTW, disregard my question from the other thread. You answered it here. Tx!

Not outgrowing, but my mom used to be incredibly allergic to cats since childhood, and she went on some sort of cleanse and she's no longer allergic. They have an indoor cat now! Might be worth researching.

I outgrew my serious food allergies! When I was a baby/kid I was very allergic to dairy, eggs (extremely allergic – they made my brain swell apparently!), and either tomatoes or potatoes - I can’t remember which. I believe I also had other food allergies – my mom had to make all my baby food before that became an en vogue thing to do and said it was really difficult and a PITA.

I have NO food allergies now, except maybe a very slight one to kiwi fruit and sometimes milk/ice cream upsets my stomach if I eat a ton of it at once, but I can eat as much other dairy as I like.

My allergist said its very common to outgrow childhood allergies.

Wow, I'm so sorry your LO has so many allergies - it must be so stressful for you! I'm not sure if this counts but I used to be severely lactose intolerant as a kid and eventually outgrew it (but only when I became pregnant)...I'm sorry, I'm sure that wasn't helpful... :(

I'm allergic to bunch of stuff and unfortunately, I've passed this horrible trait to my LO. We recently had her tested and and she's allergic to 7 of the 8 most common foods: Peanuts, tree nuts, soy, dairy, wheat, egg, fish. In addition to these 7, she's also allergic to black pepper, sesame seeds, and garlic. To top it off, she has oral allergy syndrome when she eats any tart fruits (which is basically everything but bananas).

It makes me really sad that her diet is going to be so limited and scared that she might come to harm accidentally eating this stuff (especially peanuts). I am seriously struggling to put together a menu of healthy meals for her to eat and I hope she outgrows at least some of these allergies eventually.

Please tell me if you or your LO has outgrown any allergies and at about what age?
