She had three kids and each of them chose something different (one chose the mom's name, one chose the dad's and the other hyphenated). I love it. My personal preference is no hyphenated names just because I didn't know, if you hyphenate, what you would give your child. Thankfully we both had longish last names so that didn't matter so much. </p> <p>Also, sometimes things depend on the state. In Maryland you could only have three names, you couldn't have 4 names. So, if you had a first, middle, last and new last name, you had to choose. I had a mini freak out before changing my name because it's just weird not sharing a name with my parents and siblings, and I've had that name for so long. But then I quickly realized that it's only a name and it doesn't make me who I am, and it also doesn't make me any less of a daughter or sister to my family. My name was shortened (as was DH's) so it wasn't even our original name. If it was I might have more attachment to it.
