I changed my name after getting married. It was important to me that as a family we all had the same name. Thank god DH didn't have a shocker of a last name!

I had both my Mom's name and my Dad's name, but I use my husbands name now. Technically my Mom's is one of my middle names because the state I was born in wouldn't allow two last names, but did allow two middle names.
Now I just use whichever combination I'm feeling that day.

Our kids will have DH's name as their last, and my family names as middle.

@jumpingjacks: My dad's family does that--allows the child to choose which last name they want. They've been doing it for generations, though, so the family tree on that side is confusing! :-D

My siblings and I were given my mom's maiden name as a middle name with my dad's last name. The plan is to do the same for our LOs-- my maiden as middle and just DH's last name.

My DH and I have both kept our original names. We plan to give our child both last names and let him/her choose later which one they would like to use more commonly. I only know of one other person who has done this. She had three kids and each of them chose something different (one chose the mom's name, one chose the dad's and the other hyphenated). I love it. I think its brilliant.

@mediagirl: I'm in Maryland too! I was also an idiot about names, because I really wanted all four of my names, so I kept all four on my social security card but could only use three on my driver's license, and somehow a different three (i.e. different middle) ended up on my credit cards and health insurance card.

I changed my last name so there would be no confusion with kids. My personal preference is no hyphenated names just because I didn't know, if you hyphenate, what you would give your child. Thankfully we both had longish last names so that didn't matter so much.

Also, sometimes things depend on the state. In Maryland you could only have three names, you couldn't have 4 names. So, if you had a first, middle, last and new last name, you had to choose. I chose first last and new last (maiden name is now my middle name).

@blushink: Wow, and I thought it cost a lot for me to change my name. I had a mini freak out before changing my name because it's just weird not sharing a name with my parents and siblings, and I've had that name for so long. But then I quickly realized that it's only a name and it doesn't make me who I am, and it also doesn't make me any less of a daughter or sister to my family. My name was shortened (as was DH's) so it wasn't even our original name. If it was I might have more attachment to it. But I do love having the same name as DH, he's my family now.

@artbee: Oh the province of Quebec prefers you NOT change name after marriage (they are PRO independence) so changing my name to my husbands is a huge hassel and costs like 500$

That being said, I like my name. So I'm happy, I kept it.

After my middle name question... I was wondering if it was common for your LO to have both the parent's last name.

I originally only wanted my kids to have my husband's last name, but he insisted on having both because he finds my last name pretty and wants our kids to have the choice to change in the future if they like.

Having 2 last names is pretty common in the french part of Quebec... not in other cultures (i don't think)

I was curious to know if you have 2 last names.
