We have guns in our home, but that's primarily because my husband is a police officer. Although, we would likely still own a couple shot guns if he were in a different field.

I really have no issues with keeping guns in the home as long as there are conscious measures in place to keep them safe. One of the most important of those being education. I see absolutely no sense in keeping them a secret from children. The more they know about them and their potential danger the better. Its the mystery of them and ignorance of their potential that leads to problems.

First off, we have a gun safe and all the guns have trigger locks on them...that being said we have a shotgun and pistol here at our house (along with a Bee-bee gun...). Growing up my grandparents had shotguns all over their house. I was taught they were always loaded (and they really were).

That being said, I don't exactly want a handgun upstairs in the dining room or something as a self-defense object. That I find weird.

My dad is a history buff and has Civil War style black powder rifles and carbines and some old pistols. He would use them (with blanks) when participating in living history events, but we would take them to the range sometimes, too. Now that I think of it he never kept them locked up, but they were put away.

My husband has guns - some rifles, shotguns and pistols (he hunts, but hasn't in a long while) - but I honestly don't know where he keeps them. They are definitely put away somewhere safe.

To me, it's different with my husband's guns than it was growing up with the guns my dad had. My dad's were for teaching history and were a small collection of historical pieces. My husband's are modern rifles, shotguns and pistols and having them is a completely different feel to me. I didn't grow up in a hunting family at all, and especially since my husband hasn't gone hunting in several years, I guess I just don't see the need to have them (or so many). Although, I'm sure I'd be more comfortable having my own when at home alone when DH works out of town..

@mrbee: And p.s. I am seriously jealous that you'll never need a car! What I would give to never have to drive again. I think teleportation needs to become a national priority.

Does anybody know how quickly those fingerprint lock safes unlock? My hubs is dead to the world when he sleeps, so I'd probably be the "unlocker" in case of an incident, but I'm also blind as a bat so it would be a catch 22. I hate the idea of the whole "shotgun behind the headboard" thing too, since it seems way too easy for a kid to get a hold of.

We own close to 50 guns if I had to guess. My husband is an avid hunter, and hunts a large variety of animals, which requires quite a collection. He has also been handed down a few guns from older family members (which is common in the south), so there are those, as well. A handful are also muzzle loaders (black powder), which take an act of God to load and shoot, so they hardly count.

Probably 10 of those are handguns, which I am not a huge fan of, but I do have a concealed license and am completely comfortable with them all, so I carry one in my car.

We keep everything but the handguns in our cars and bedside table in the safe. We are currently pregnant, though, and have been discussing how we want to handle things from now on. We both think it's important to have a real system for dealing with them all and how we want to introduce our child to them.

All that said, I really could not care less about guns or if we had them or not for protection, but my husband really loves them and hunting is truly a lifestyle for him, so I know they will always be around. And I have had one incident in which I was very appreciative that I had a loaded gun in my hand that thankfully worked out,but that could have been very dangerous for me had I not been able to protect myself.

My father is a police officer so I grew up with a gun in the house. I even found it (in a poor hiding spot) when I was a child but knew enough not to touch it. That being said, I would prefer not to have guns in our house until our children are older, although DH would love one. We live in China though, so it's unlikely we'll need to worry about guns anytime soon.

nope none in our current house. When we move the hubs wants to get one though. I have a fear like you of someone accidentally shooting someone on accident and it freaks me out if he had a gunsafe with a finger lock or something where I knew for sure Sae or any future children would never be able to get in it then I might relax about getting one.

@Killer b: I was just objecting to the idea that knives kill just as easily as guns... or even 62% as easily. I think for a trained hunter, perhaps it is just as easy. :-) I'm just a city slicker though.

I don't plan on having a car or a gun. But I do wish that owning guns required a license and exam, like cars do.

Anyway this thread was just asking people if they have a gun in the house... glad to hear that so many people do and that gun safety is so clearly a priority across the hive! :-)

@mrbee: Unfortunately, "Charlotte! Put that knife down, it's only 62% as easy to kill yourself with a knife than a gun!" just doesn't have the same ring to it ;) My point was, guns alone do not cause deaths. The people behind them do. Whether it's through violence or being careless with them.

Also, the most deadly weapon out there isn't a gun. It's not a knife either. It's your car. There are more annual deaths due to motor vehicles than firearms or knives. I'm significantly more afraid to drive with my child than I am to have guns near her. I'm a horrible driver anyway, so that doesn't really help my anxiety!

Oh man, we just had to deal with this situation this week at my parents' house. We never had guns growing up but my stepdad has recently gotten in touch with his inner redneck and purchased two guns. I don't have anything against guns but don't see the need for my parents to have them at all, and I am very concerned about safety. My stepdad said they are "hidden" but that isn't good enough for me. My 20 year old and 13 year old brothers live at home and I worry about them doing something stupid. DH and I have already discussed and agreed that when we have kids, we will insist on the guns always being in a gun safe when the kids are there, or we won't come over.

I grew up with them. Hunting family, but they were ALWAYS locked up and I honestly never knew where the key was. As soon as I was old enough to be enrolled in a gun safety class I was in it. DH and I own a gun and it is in a safe. (Fingerprint one as well) So yes.

We do not and I would prefer to keep guns out of our house but my husband wants one. I think we will stay a gun-free house just because he is too lazy to go out and take a gun safety class, research a gun and then pull the trigger (no pun intended) to buy one. He would then have to purchase a gun safe (because I say so) which would add even more money to that. I would understand if he were a hunter and had rifles for hunting. I totally get that. Having a pistol in the bedroom, though? I'm not so cool with that.

My last boyfriend before my husband was shot in the face by a neighbor when he was 6 years old. The neighbor was playing with his Dad's gun and the gun went off. He has a big scar on his face from it.

I believe in your right to bear arms, as long as you care for and store your guns properly.

@Navy_Mommy: Killing someone with a knife requires much more experience and focus. I have shot guns and could easily kill with a gun. Knives are much tougher and messier.

I've been attacked with a knife and unless the other person really wants to kill you, they will tend to be tentative and are fairly easy to disarm or just to run away from.

For those of you who are shocked by the number of people who have guns in their house it looks like between 32% and 39% of American homes have at least one gun. So, between 1 in 3 houses and 2 in 5. And mind you, these statistics wouldn't include illegal guns, so it could actually be higher...

@Miss Adia: This is an awesome story! What a smart kid you have :)

My husband is a gun NUT. We have upwards of 20 guns in our house. And 3 bows, along with some pellet/bb guns and about a dozen knives or so. He was brought up in a hunting-enthusiastic family, and has hunted his entire life. He got a bowie knife for his fifth birthday (it was blunted though, thank goodness!) I even own a .380 pistol that I'd love to get my concealed handgun license with. I gifted my hubs with the class for his birthday, and I'm pretty excited that he'll be able to carry. You never know sometimes, what can happen.

We plan to educate our daughter on the serious perils of guns and weapons. That safety is our #1 concern.

Guns aren't toys, but they're not taboo either. Knives can kill just as easily. So can electricity. Or concussions. Guns don't kill, people kill, and it's important to remember that. Or maybe I'm just overly vigilant about the impending zombie apocalypse ;)

My parents didn't own a gun, but DH bought one a few years back when we were dating. I bought him a biometric safe for Christmas last year (and before that he kept it in a regular gun safe). I don't notice the difference between when we didn't have one and now. It is for DH's peace of mind and it stays out of my way in the gun safe.

My husband has a hand gun. Hopefully, after the first of the year we'll do some target shooting and I'll take a gun safety course to become more familiar with using it. I honestly don't even think about it being in the house. It's locked away out of sight. The last time my husband had it out was about 5 months ago. We were staying at the family farm, which has been empty for awhile since his Grandpa had a stroke and is in a nursing home. We were worried because the farm is pretty secluded and we weren't sure if we'd have any uninvited guests (teenagers looking for a party spot/squaters). We did-just a couple raccoon's and coyotes but we felt safer knowing we had some added protection on a relatively isolated farm.

@Rubies: It also seems unusual to me and I live in the States. When I wanted to feel safer, I learned how to box.

OMG, no way! I can't believe so many of you have or had guns! It's so crazy to me! Maybe it's because I live in Canada...
