We have a joint savings and checking account. I do have a personal savings/checking account back in my home state that I haven't gotten around to closing or moving the money over to our shared account. It's a credit union only in my home state, and I only go back once a year usually after work hours. The hubby knows about the account, and since it's not doing any harm being open, we'll keep it there as an emergency fund (for now).

Everything is joint.
My family -including my brothers!- think I'm silly for not having a secret stash. I believe in no secrets in a relationship and see no need for a separate stash.

My SIL has a separate stash, my brother knows about it and he's totally fine about it! I'm VERY surprised about that one!

Nope.
We have one joint checking and one joint savings.
We put our money/accounts together before we were even engaged!

Sometimes I save cash in my underwear drawer... does that count?

We have a joint account and we each have our own savings accounts. I have two, one regular with a tidy sum in it, and another high-interest tax-free account with pretty much nothing in it. Plus my own credit card which my DH wants me to get rid of, but after a bout with bad credit, I need every bit available to keep it sparkling. I also have the second card to my husband's credit card.

I would never ever get rid of my own accounts. You never know what could happen.

Both our checking accounts are joint, and we have one joint savings account. About a year ago, I opened a third checking account that is in my name only. I was putting money in there for DD (saving during pregnancy). We will take that money and invest it for her, or open a savings account to continue to save money for her.

@looch: I heard about how japanese wives would skim money off the household allowance before we moved here. I didn't know the husbands also took money out of their paychecks to hide for personal use. The number of married people with secret accounts is incredible here. My husband asked some of the Japanese men he works with and they all said they have secret accounts that their wives don't know about.

We have a mishmash, some accounts are joint, some are not, some abroad, some in the US. We need to sort it out and consolidate.

@mynoahbear: I heard about those "secret" Japanese accounts. I read somewhere those are to help women in case they have to divorce, not surw where I got that from!

I have a separate checking account I use for splurge purchases, but I don't use it very often and DH knows I have it. I don't keep much in there but it's nice knowing I have it. DH just uses our joint account although he has a separate credit card he rarely uses. Both of these are from before we married and we just held on to them.

When we first moved here to tokyo, we went to the bank to open an account. But we found out that they don't allow joint accounts in Japan and everyone has their own accounts. So we ended having to each open an account. Since I don't work, hubby just transfers money into my account. We learned from friends here that most japanese husbands and wives always have several accounts and one of the accounts is always a secret from the other.

We have a joint account and separate checking accounts. My husband uses his checking account to transfer money into to pay back my FIL for a loan we borrowed. I use my personal checking account as a "just in case" and only have a grand in there. We also have a separate stash of "just in case" money at home too. I like to be prepared for the unexpected I guess?

We have always had completely separate accounts. When we got married, we added a joint account for household items and a joint savings account. We still have our separate accounts. Come January, we are merging our paychecks because I'll be on his insurance and it'll put a hit on his paycheck. We will keep our separate savings and checking accounts, though for our me money.

We have joint and individual -checking and savings accounts. Most of our money is in our joint accounts. The individual accounts are just on the safe side. Neither of us have a ton of money, so I know we aren't hiding anything.

We have a total of 3 accounts because we recently married. 2 belonged to me and one belongs to DH. I've always had internet banking acct while he has a Credit Union. Since I'm the #s person, I handle all the finances and we both have access to all accounts.

We have completely separate accounts, at different banks. We share a credit card which we use for all purchases (for points) and then I manage our money. The savings account is only in my name, but it is ours, and our money. I also have a savings tied to my personal checking, as does my husband. We see no reason to get joint accounts.

@MsMamaBear: Just FYI on the wanting to spread it out among banks. You are covered pretty well between FDIC and SIPC if your bank should go under. Just something to think about. Because it is usually more cost effective to consolidate to one bank. Especially with all the new account fees popping up all over the place.

Our savings is together, checking accounts separate. We use the checking accounts as our "spending accounts" for daily expenses, etc. It's easier for us this way. But nothing is "hidden" or something that the other doesn't have access to, if they need/etc.

Everything is joint for us, but we do have multiple accounts with several banks at our financial planner's urging. I kept my original accounts and added my husband, but mainly because my student loans are through the same bank and it is easier to pay bills that way. Our main account is my husband's original account, which has most of our bills payed out of already anyway from when we lived together before being married.
