it might seem strange at first not understanding and knowing what your child is saying, but i would totally encourage it. i think it would be good for both you and your child because for me, i would try and learn the language a little too.

I'd probably feel left out and want to learn it too. However I do hope I can expose my future kids to another language so they don't have a hard time picking up languages later in life like I do.

I barely speak French but we'll be sending Cameron to a French immersion school when he's old enough. Once he hits high school I'm also going to try and encourage him to take a spanish class. I know I'll feel left out if he's speaking it around me, but I'd rather him have an advantage at getting a great job later on.

I can speak Spanish and my parents can't...they did catch on though so I don't think it's a bad thing at all.

I would probably want to make an effort to learn any language my kids learn, only so they can't use it against me. Me and my sisters went to french immersion school, and neither of my parents speak french, and we definitely took advantage of that when we were teenagers!

We used to have a secret language when we were younger. Not really secret (French) but my parents didn't understand. My sister and I will occasionally speak in french when we don't want people around us understanding what we're saying.
I Don't think i'd mind if my LOs spoke to each other in a secret language. As long as they aren't plotting against us, it's all good.

I don't think that I would like it in some ways, but would in others. I'd feel left out, too, I think, but it's such a great way to expand a kid's mind.

@MK0180 I learned Japanese when we got engaged hoping it would help me communicate better with his famiy. Now my husband and I speak it to each other at home so that I don't get rusty and so that Liam gets exposed to it :) I am taking a French class right now and told my husband that he WILL be taking us to France so that I can practice haha :)

I would encourage it. I hope that my mom will teach any kids we have Japanese but learning other languages will help with brain development and open so many doors for them.

I would suggest that if your child is going to learn a second or third language that you also learn some of that language, at least conversationally, and use it. Language skills that are not used are lost. I spoke fluent multiple languages as a kid, but stopped using them in HS and they are now lost. My sister spoke 6 languages fluently up until a few years ago. She stopped traveling and hanging out with those bilingual friends and most of those are languages are also lost for her. Sad, she was a sponge for languages.

If my lo learns any language but English I'd be left out! I don't think I'd mind though, I'd probably just keep asking what things mean.

I don't think you're being silly! Maybe that's just because I'd feel the same way. It is definitly a great thing, while a child is still young to learn new languages. But I'd want to be able to communicate with them, in any language they'll use.

I wouldn't mind. We've been talking about putting our future little one(s) into a bi-lingual school as it will help them when they grow up. We think it will probably be French as that is one of the official languages of the U.N. - and we love France and it would be oh so helpful to have one of our family members who can speak French ;)

Yeah, I would feel left out, too! I am thinking of sending my LO to the French American school and neither of us know French so that is going to be a little weird ... but I am hoping to pick up a little French at least.

My nanny has been teaching Liam some Cantonese. My husband and I speak Japanese and English at home. I guess I feel a bit funny at not understanding what he is saying and perhaps even a bit left out haha :) Maybe I should ask for lessons! I of course encourage it because his little mind soaks up so much but does anyone else feel this way? I think I may want to smack myself for being so silly.
