@Danizaur: I think my parents told us that we should call our friend's parents by Mrs. and Mr. whatever unless told otherwise, but I can't remember any parent that didn't say "oh call me Val" or whatever when I'd meet them, even when we were pretty little. Maybe its a midwest thing.

@Mae: Speaking of the respect/title thing, it's completely unheard of to call someone Mr. Or Mrs. So and so except for teachers. I was never taught to call people that way. It was always first names. I think it's just my area? We keep a lot of aspects of speaking as casual as possible.

@Smurfette: that makes total sense. DH has a few God children and I listened attentively the first few times when I was around him and the kids to figure out if I would be Lemon or Ms. Lemon or Aunt Lemon. I'm an aunt. Lol

I do for most of them to their faces. If I'm talking about them to my parents I usually only use their first name. Also the spouses of my uncle and aunt who were married after I was in high school I call by their first name.

When I talk about them I say Aunt/Uncle, but when I am actually talking to them in person (and always have) use their first name. However, I do call my grandma's sisters Aunt, not just their first name. Maybe becaue they are my grandma's age I use a title? I've never thought about it before (or it's what my mom calls them.)

Interesting how many people say its a respect thing! I don't feel like my parents ever really used title to convey respect for us. They actually weren't really big on the whole "respect your elders" thing. It was more just--- respect everyone, I guess. :) But adults didn't have special standing for the sake of making it to adulthood.

I actually think it is really weird for DS to call his aunts and uncles by their title. With my family, I just use their name. But with DH's family, they have all inserted the title before the name, even though when I refer to one of them I just use their name.

My nephews call us Aunt and Uncle.

@Smurfette: why don't you correct them?

By the time my brother came along people in my area started doing the first name thing with adults. My dad didn't mind, but my mom always told children to call her Mrs. Last name.

I'd like to think I am young, but even with my favorite cousin's little girls I am Cousin Lemon.

Yes. In fact, we just celebrated my grandmother's birthday this weekend, and my mom and aunt were still telling us "kids" what to call THEIR aunts and uncles in Chinese. It gets so technical depending on gender and side of family. I told them "Auntie/Uncle xyz" was about as good as they were going to get, because if we still couldn't remember at this age, it wasn't ever happening. I think "Great-Uncle and Great-Aunt" were too formal, but Uncle & Auntie would suffice.
