My closest friends and I have fairly similar views when it comes to politics, but I have a couple work friends that I talk politics with that have differing views. I can talk to them though because we're all very good at listening to the other point of view and we also understand that people view different things as more important than others.

For example, one of my friends views issues like the economy higher than other issues. Another friend views more social issues (like the right to choose, or gay marriage) as more important. So in those regards, they both can understand why one person might vote one way while the other might vote another. So we're pretty good about being respectful when it comes to politics.

I don't, mainly because politics bore me.

Most of my friends have the same political views that I do, so we have no problem discussing politics.

My family, on the other hand, believes very staunchly the exact opposite that I do, and I avoid conversations with them at all costs....seriously, even talking about the weather can be a landmine.

@maysprout: I think the reason why she was so against me banking my son's cord blood is because she thinks that the more people privately bank (and of course, money talks), the more interest it starts to generate in the public and it may open up the discussion of more embryotic research. Sigh. I didn't tell her I plan on banking my 2nd child's cord blood because we might get into a fist fight or something. LOL

I used to more. Now I try not to if it sounds like someones going to get heated, there's no point, it's argument for sport then. If its a discussion I'll add my two cents.

@banana: I think your friend might be a bit confused. The republicans are against research on stem cells from embryos, they're fine with research on umbilical cord and adult stem cells.

NO WAY! I can't even talk to my husband about politics. Honestly, this is the time of year I start hiding people on Facebook because they start political rants without really educating themselves on the political field. Politics, money and religion are no-no's when it comes to talking to friends.

I love talking politics with my friends especially since we rarely agree and it's fascinating to see why they believe the way they do. I think it makes all of us better.

I do have a few friends who have such a shallow political understanding yet such vehement views that it's pointless to talk politics with them... they're so certain that they're right, yet they don't know about the issues in any depth, so they just get emotional. It's not worth it.

@Andrea: I basically do the same thing!! I enjoy talking about politics but don't want to start a huge fight or make anyone feel awkward! I love to debate but am pretty competitive & that's just not something I want to ruin friendships over. I do have a hard time when people make comments to me that I completely disagree with but find it best to bite my tongue. My friends know my political stances, not the details maybe but generally, but I don't care to hash it out beyond that.

We do and we don't. I definitely don't get involved in overheated conversations, but I'm definitely open to hearing out all different sides of an issue or topic. Thankfully, my one friend that usually gets hot headed about stuff like this has been open-minded when topics do arise.

I HATE talking politics with inlaws. I respect their views, I just hate some of the ignorant comments they make in general. But, they're set in their ways... what can ya do? I just usually get quiet and MIL gets the hint that she's making me uncomfortable.

I recently found out that one of my close childhood friends is a republican. I NEVER knew that about her and it was quite surprising. We started talking about stem cell research and she was so adamantly against it and was a little upset that I told her we banked our son's cord blood. I just stopped the conversation because I didn't want to get into that with her. I knew where that was going.

I only talk politics with people who have similar views. Haha. I know that sounds so closed minded but I do that to avoid arguments.

My pet peeve about talkin' politics is how people will have so much conviction about things they don't know much about! For example, the economy.

Our group of friends generally doesn't talk politics, I don't think it is something that we do on purpose, it just isn't a big topic of conversation for us!

Two close girlfriends of mine recently had a HUUUUUGE fight over conflicting political views. And their friendship hasn't been the same since. They were arguing over taxes (one believed that everyone should get taxed equally and one believed the rich should be taxed more). Anyhow, we decided to avoid talking about politics in fear of someone getting into another huge argument. Who knew how heated political debates can get?

Do you talk politics with your friends? Are the conversations cordial or heated?
