That is crappy! In our office, if 1 doesn't get a raise, the rest of the office doesn't. (but how can we really check to be sure)
It's not a way for them to quit, though I was really considering it when they lowered my pay when I went back after my first child.

Not here, I have never heard them withholding bonuses from people, however I do know they will do other things to those who they are trying to get leave, none that would apply to me since I'm salary & the tactics only work for those on commission.

How was your review? I am a manager and have to make decisions about raises and bonuses. If someone is doing a poor job, they get a lower raise/bonus or no bonus. I have never tried to run someone out by not giving them a bonus or raise, though. I would think something like that would have me looking for another job.

I've never gotten bonuses at the places I work... Non-profits just don't do that sort of thing.

But Mr. Jacks just interviewed at a large well-known financial firm and the HR director said that if you only get a tiny bonus or no bonus after your first year that you can be pretty assured that things are not going well for you there.

I think it depends. I think if you got both no raise or bonus it is not a good sign but also could be a sign of the bad economy. When I'm unhappy with an employee, I start pulling work and giving to another employee. I also start making them give me a detailed list of exactly what they are working on and expected due dates and I ride them if they are late.

From my personal experience, yes. I had that happen to me at my former job. They gave me a small bonus to keep me 'happy' but they wouldn't give me a raise. I was so upset. I wanted the raise more than the bonus. They let me go about 1.5 months later.

It depends...usually you get a performance review first and then you find out your bonus, raise and promotion status. There have been years when people got no raise or bonus but got promoted, years when no one got bonuses but got raises and promotions, all combinations seem to exist out there.

It's called constructive dismissal (in Canada at least) and you can sue for it. Although, the case you cite wouldn't really qualify, I don't think, because I think you would usually need to have a pay cut or pay freeze or other major changes implemented unilaterally by your employer (e.g. demotion and title change).

@Modern Daisy: it sounds like they were trying to be cheap and that backfired. that happened to me at my first job. i was unhappy with the raise/bonus and i told them so - they didn't do anything -so i found another job and then they were more than happy to match whatever my new offer was without knowing the amount. but then of course i didn't stay either because i had found a better job! and you're right, i'm sure they didn't learn any lessons from that.

What I thought was strange about the situation is the amount they were willing to pay me to get me to stay. It was about a 25% increase and I hadn't even told them what my other offer was for. I was at the bottom of the corporate ladder as a new employee, but I was definitely a good performer which I had proven since they doubled my responsibilities that year. I hope it was a lesson to them - but it probably wasn't.

That's a huge bummer!! I would start job hunting also because that's just discouraging. I understand companies need to save money to continue to be profitable, but rewarding employees is such a huge thing to retain talented people. Sorry you got the lower end of the stick. I feel ya!

Oh...was this my comment? :-/

In my world, yes if profits are good, then everyone expects a raise and bonus. If profits are good, and you get neither, then it is a big hint to start job hunting. And people generally seem to get the hint.

That's pretty sucky. When I first started my job I got a pay cut a few months later. But it was for budget reasons, and I knew that.

As a spinoff to the posts about layoffs, I got to thinking. For those of you in manager positions, is it normal practice to try to get someone to quit by not giving them a raise or bonus? I understand that sometimes funds just aren't available and that's a different situation. But when you have a bonus pool and money to give out for raises, would you exclude someone intentionally instead of firing them?

At my first job, I thought they were trying to get me to quit because I got a 2% raise and a $1,000 bonus ($500 after tax) which sounds pretty decent right now in tough economic times, but it was 2005 and the company was making record profits and the average raise was close to 5% and most people in my position got a $5K bonus just for showing up.

It prompted me to start interviewing at other companies and I resigned a few months later expecting them to be happy but much to my surprise they were very upset and countered to get me to stay. I didn't just on principal since I was so upset about having to go through all that.
