Kind of. Only if you plan vacationy things around it. For instance, a trip to Disneyland, sightseeing, wine tasting, or 2 days on a cruise while you're there. Pigging out (in our book) counts as well. But it has to be planned in advance for the full effect of 'a vacation', instead of last-min trip where someone would have to spend that time to book and plan it.

Those things would obvious require at least a week, as for overnight or weekend visits and you can't do much but visit and eat out, then I wouldn't call that a vacation at all.

If we are just driving the 3 hours to our hometown for a visit, no, but if we head to the coast to see my grandparents and aunt, then yes. Mostly though, even when we go to the coast we just spend a few days with family and the rest of our trip doing road-trip fun stuff, with a variety of different stops.

Only if it's somewhere fun. Visiting them at their homes over the holidays is not a vacation. Going to the Caribbean with them, or on a cruise, or to a ski resort, definitely counts. (I have the most generous in-laws in the world, if that wasn't obvious). We absolutely crave our own vacations in addition to these, though, especially international ones. This can get difficult when we only have so much leave from work. I know, terrible problem to have, too many vacations.

depends. but more likely NO! now, if i were visiting family in CA, and made it into a vacation (going to wineries, visiting sites, etc), then yes. i'd consider it a vacation. if i were visiting family in kansas, no way lol.

Depends on which family I'm visiting, lol. If it was my cousins in LA, then "No" cause it would most likely be a family obligation but if it was my SIL in Hong Kong then yes, it would be :)

ETA: Now that we have LO, a vacation visiting family isn't so bad because we can always have them babysit LO while the husband and I go out for dinner. :)

I think we both say yes....otherwise we never take vacation!!

We usually go to DH's family's lakehouse for a week in the summer - his whole family is there - to me, that's vacation.

Last year, my family rented a house on Cape Cod for the week - to me, that's vacation.

Christmas week at home with the families - eh, still vacation.

We spend a LOT of time with our families - we get along with them really well. I do wish we took more of our "own" vacations, though.

Yes. Any time I get to get out of the house for a long period of time it's a vacation. Although it's probably more of a vacation for me to visit hubby's family then my own. Is that bad?

I say sort of, but not really. It's just different if the main purpose of a trip is to see certain people, rather than to experience a place. But at the same time, since my family are back in the States I'm sure a majority of our "vacations" will be to visit family.

I say no. Even though we have to fly back to the States to see our families, I still don't consider it a vacation, especially if we are visiting DH's family. It's not relaxing. There's so much to do because we are only there for a limited time and our families live in different states, so it's just too hectic. It's more an obligation than a vacation.

I say absolutely not. I know it's time off work and away from home, potentially even in a nice climate, but your time is not your own when visiting family and there is an obligation even associated with the idea of it that kicks it out of vacation territory.

But I do think that going somewhere WITH family could count as vacation, as long as it's neutral turf. Like everyone is from NY and you all go to a resort in Puerto Rico. That would count since you can all still do your own thing and no one is 'in charge'

I think it depends on where the family is located (2 hour drive away, no - several hour airplane ride away, maybe) and if you're able to do any exploring and/or relaxing, or if the entire time is filled with family obligations.

it depends on how "helpful" family is in caring for the kids. (I assume that is the main reason for the trip?) If they want to spend time with your children while you go and enjoy a night out or two, well then, that IS a vacation! Otherwise, a big no.

I say “no” because in my mind you’re fulfilling an obligation, rather than just going on vacation. Its hard though, since usually when we go to visit family, we also take several days for ourselves. We count those more as “vacation” and the family days as well…not a real vacation.

I kind of view any vacation with kids as not a real vacation. Does that sound terrible? But at this young age, LO is a lot of work to travel with.
