I don't mind them on other people, although I'm not a fan of full sleeves or facial tattoos. I just have never, ever had the desire to get one myself. I can't commit to something like that and have it on my skin for my whole life.

I've always wanted to get a script tattoo on my foot, curved along the side of my foot in cursive. "Not all those who wander are lost". I've also always been a fan on Angelina Jolie's latitude and longitude tats of where all her children have been born.
I would never get a colored tattoo, but some of the black ones that are script are really beautiful.

I had wanted a tat from the time I was 15 so when I was 25 I finally got one. I loved it for a few months and then sort of wished I didn't get it. *sigh* I will cry the day LO starts begging to get a tattoo.

I did it because it was something cool to have. I thought my parents would be pissed but they weren't. I think I was 20 or 21 when I got my tattoo. I don't regret having one. I want to get another.

@Rosie Girl: " When I see them, I think of what they represent and what is important to me. They are for me, not for everyone else."

I think that is the main thing to remember, tattoos are for the person that has them on their body, not for the feelings they evoke in others. I have 5 and from looking at me at my desk you would never know. One on each foot, a small one on the inside of my wrist, one on my arm and one on my lower back.
I also like that if you looked at them you would have no idea what they mean, but to me they stand for so much. You might see 3 rings, but I see me and my two sisters joined forever. You see a row of dots and I see my wedding anniversary. I love that they are a way to express something that will stay with you forever. That is why you should put LOTS of thought into them before you take the plunge.

@cyndistar3: LOL, that's so cute. I never thought of it that way. I would just think "Ewww, this butterfly is going to be faded and saggy as hell when she's 60."

I'm not a fan of tattoos personally, but I don't judge or care if others get them. A few of my friends have tattoos that I think are completely pointless (OK, maybe I judge a bit)-- but it's not my body, so meh.

@mrbee: LOL. I love your reasoning :)

I have a tattoo on the inside of my wrist, and I don't hate it, like can't-live-with-myself hate it, but I definitely don't like it all that much either. I got it when I was 18 because I thought it would be cool to have a tattoo. I fancied myself rebellious and edgy. It says "Dream" in a pretty crappy script font. Now, I feel like it's trite, and I compulsively say that pretty much every time someone notices it. Person: "Oh, nice tattoo." Me: "Oh, yeah, thanks I guess. I got it when I was 18. It's kind of trite." {awkward silence where the other person doesn't know what to say now}

I guess I don't want to be judged by my cliche tattoo? But to be honest, probably 28 out of 30 days of the year I don't think about it or notice it. So it's like, whatever. But to answer your question - I don't get it either. I think some tattoos are really cool or pretty, but they are way too permanent and I would never get another one.

I've personally never been tempted to get a tatoo, just because it's so permanent and I've always been afraid that I would either get sick of it or even gain a lot of weight in that area and have it stretch out.

I have three and they all have special meaning to me. All mine can be covered up. One is on my foot which is meaningful because my best friend who I met and served with in the USN got the same one with me. The other two are on my back. First one when I was 18, the second one I got when I was deployed in Japan when I was like 23'ish I think.
@Navy-Mommy- Good point. Will have to remember that "come back" So true!

Hahaha, I always say the same thing! When people say, "aren't you worried about what it's gonna look like when you're old and wrinkly?" And I usually respond, "aren't YOU worried about what you'll look like when you're old and wrinkly? Tattoos or not, I won't be showing off my old and wrinkly body!" lol But all of mine can be covered with clothes.

I do not understand people who tattoo gang names/ gang symbols.. its like they want to be caught.
Tattoos in general confuse me. I've never understood why people need to prove their love or support for a person or a cause by getting it etched into their skin. Its also a bit odd seeing old granmas and granpas with wrinkly tattoos.

I've always, always been fascinated with tattoos. when the national geographic channel shows would come on about indigenous peoples who had a tradition of tattooing, I would record those on vhs & watch them over & over. and I choose to research tattoos when we had open school projects to do. growing up, my mom had one, but she dated some bikers & other people who had tattoos, too, so maybe that's where part of it comes from for me. I just always thought that they were so beautiful & was fascinated by the history & techniques.
did you know that in the late 1800s it became a big thing for the british nobility to get tattoos? who'd of thunk?
I'd like to eventually get a traditional hand-tapped tattoo
mine right now are all things that have meaning to me, but if I found the right artist & had gotten all the big pieces done that I currently have planned, I wouldn't mind getting something tattooed on me because it was a beautiful piece of art. we're all going to be wrinkled & old one day, mine will just be a little more colourful :)

i think for every person there is a different reason. my roommate has tons of them and all are for their artistic value. mine all represent sometihng important to me. they are my visual reminders of concepts i hold dear. mine are both in areas that are covered a great deal of the time and truthfully as much as i love showing them off they are for me and me alone. with the bonus of not being able to be used to identify me if i rob a bank :)

My tattoos all have a meaning to me, and are all fairly small. The largest one I have is on my ribs, but its not huge. They are all also easily hidden. You can't see any of them on a day to day basis, and most people don't even know I have them.

When I see them, I think of what they represent and what is important to me. They are for me, not for everyone else.

I have two small tattoos that have a lot of personal meaning for me, and remind me of important moments/elements of my life.

Honestly, if I had the money, I would have a full sleeve! While there are millions of awful tattoos out there, the well-done ones just blow me away. Plus they're kind of addictive, despite the pain.

They're a way of expressing yourself in a permanent way.

Yes, if you have obvious tattoos that you can see in everyday life - like on your neck, arm, hand, face, etc - this can help identify you if you were to get in trouble. Not all people who get tattoos are criminals, though (obviously).

They became something of a trend in the 90's. You'll notice there are more people under the age of 40 with tattoos than people over that age.

I got my tattoo because of my love for the ocean and my love of sea turtles. I got it when I was young and didn't mind spending my money on something like that. I don't understand getting a tattoo that doesn't really mean anything to you - just getting one because "it's cool" or "all of my friends got one."

I think I understand the motivation to get one, but I know I could never-- I get sick of things very easily and I know I'd regret it. I'd want to change the positioning, size, color, image, etc etc etc probably every year. I have changed my engagement ring once already and I've only been married for 6 years... and I'm planning on changing it again next year!!! So if I can't commit to one ring style I know I could never commit to a tattoo I could never change.

When you saw all those tattoos on America's Most Wanted that was probably back when tattooing was still illegal. I don't recall what year it became legal in NY (different years for different states) but it used to be such an underground culture. I remember my friend really wanted a tattoo when we were 16 and I went with her to this Italian guy's house in Bensonhurst where she got tattooed on his kitchen table.

In the 90s is when it became legal in most states, hence that being the time that it became so popular.

Tattooing, to me, is a form of self expression, people have different ways of telling/showing the world who they are, what they stand for--and tattoos are just one of those ways. I find them (well, not all of them) to be beautiful and artistic.

Even though I have them I guess I don't really understand tattoos either. I like the two that I have, but I'm not really attached to them. They are both small and my husband really likes them. I do sort of regret one of them. Me and two of my friends got the same tattoo after finishing our final exams our Senior year of high school. I'm not very close with one of the girls now so I guess that was kind of a dumb decision.

@mrbee I think the days of tattoos only being for criminals or cirucs freaks is over haha :) I would say out of all 7 residents I worked closely with 5 had tattoos. I have a very small pink ribbon symbolizing breast cancer and I love it. To me baking in the sun or in a booth is far more crazy of an idea than a tattoo.

The first tattoo I got was purely a rebellious act, in all honesty. I was 16 and got it on a school trip to Canada, lol.

Since then, I've gotten 5 more. Not all of them have a deep "meaning" behind them, so to speak, but they all clearly represent different times in my life (to me).

I get them because I like the artistic side of them and because I have found its a way for me to express who I am.

All of them can be covered up for work, and I like that no matter how conservative of a job I'm holding (and thus how conservative people at work perceive me to be) I always had that "other" side to myself. Anyone I worked with that later found out I had ANY tattoos, never mind multiple large pieces, has been really surprised.

I always said I would never get a tattoo because I didn't understand the point either. But then my dad started learning to do tattoos and I decided to let him give me one because I thought it would be a good bonding experience and it was. He gave me a cross with a heart in the middle and I love it and I get to say my dad gave me a tatto :)

I don't really understand tattoos.

To me, tattoos mean a sure-fire way for law enforcement to identify criminals. Growing up, I would see "America's Most Wanted" on FOX, and they would always identify people by their tattoos. I resolved to never get a tattoo, so that I wouldn't be caught after I went on the lam after a life of crime. I didn't plan on committing crimes, but I wantedto keep my options open.

Help me understand tattoos... why did you get yours, and what do tats mean to you?
