With number one it took me about an hour to realize that I was actually having contractions, the second time my water broke before contractions started so I was very aware of when I went into labor.

I knew right away, the contractions were obvious. I wasn't 100% sure that my water had actually broken before my labour with Wonder Baby started, however.

I was in major denial both times. The first time I was timing contractions for a good 5-6 hours before deciding they weren't Braxton-hicks. The second time even the doula told me it was likely false labor after 10-plus hours of irregular contractions. Both times I got to the hospital around 9 cm. I don't recommend this practice.

Maybe an hour? We had just gotten in bed for the night and I kept getting stomach cramps, but just thought I had to poop! After I realized it had happened 4 times 15 minutes apart, I started to think it might be labor!

Water broke at 4 am--slow leak. At about 1pm I was pretty sure, at 2 30 pm I was a little more sure and wanted to go to the hospital, and 5pm I came to the hospital to be checked out and they admitted me. (So 13 hours?)

I had contractions from 27 weeks on so they got more intense/faster but didn't seem like "it" yet. I am still not convinced (so 5 months? LOL)

In retrospect I really didn't need to go to the hospital that early--with no exam it's ok to go around with water broken if it isn't a super huge gush.

@HeatherlovesKenny: Or this... when they put me on the pitocin. hahaha

I was pretty sure...when I heard a loud pop but couldn't feel any water...10 mins later when we got to hospital and I was cramping I was pretty sure!

I didn't realize I was in early labor until I called my mom and started chatting with her. She asked how I was feeling and I mentioned I was feeling crampy, like I was getting my period, and she told me I better start timing contractions and make sure my bags were all packed! I probably wouldn't have realized it for at least another couple hours when I could actually feel the peaks of the contractions...

About 4 hours. My water broke at about 11pm but it was only leaking, so I didn't realize what it was right away. At about 3am, I woke up to a much larger gush and knew immediately.

About 12 hours before my contractions got regular and close enough that I thought it might be real labor. Then after I got sent home from the hospital real, serious omg labor started (like before I even made it out of the hospital), and I was convinced it wasn't real labor, because I had just been sent home! I went back to the hospital just because I was going to beg them for some drugs to make the back pain stop! When he said I was 5cm dilated, I was was like "Wait, does that mean you're not going to send me home again??"

With DD, I was having contractions for a while, but thought nothing of it until my water broke. Maybe 4 hours from the beginning of contractions until my water broke and I knew for sure. With DS, I was timing contractions for 3-4 hours before I thought, "Oh, they haven't gone away, this must be the real thing!"

With both of my kids, contractions started out at 1 minute long, 2 minutes apart from the very beginning.

I pretty much knew I was in labor right away with both kids. Contractions were pretty much 5 minutes apart as soon as they started.

How long did it take you to realize that you were actually in labor?
