I think everyone will be first name.. I never liked the mr/mrs thing. I don't know anyone one that goes by that. Growing up if people tried to call my mom Mrs. ___ she would tell them to call her by her first name. My brothers friends always called her Mrs. ___ just to bug her though!

Aunts/uncles will be "Aunt first name or uncle first name" .... or knowing my family "Auntie Firstname-y" lol

This was something the hubby and I talked about when our friends starting having kids/pre-TTC for us. This is what we agreed on.

Family-friends: Aunt/Uncle (first name)
Neighbors: Mr./Ms. (last name)
Classmate or peer-age friends' parents: Mr./Ms. (last name)
Older cousins (ex your age/ your first cousin): First name
Strangers (librarian, waitress, bus driver etc): Mr./Ms. (last name) or sir or ma'am if name is unknown

So far we've been teaching the kids to call everyone by their first names. All of our friends, DD's daycare teachers, neighbors, relatives, etc... but after the thread yesterdag, I'm thinking we ought to ask people how they want to be addressed by our kids? It seems like alot of people think it's rude for children to address adults by their first names only, and I wouldn't wan tto offend anyone.

I grew up calling anyone older, aunt or uncle and even grandma or grandpa if they were really old. If they're a close family friend, then it's auntie/uncle+first name. It's a culture thing; it's the polite way. A child calling an adult by their first name is considered impolite in my culture.

But we live overseas, and the culture here is really informal! People refer to the prime minister by his first name, no Mr. anything. No one calls anyone by their last names, it's considered stuffy, odd, and old-fashioned. Everyone goes by first names.

So I'm going to have to teach DD to call only Asian people aunties. It's a little weird to write that, but that's just how it's gonna work out.

Only real aunties and uncles will get called that (she has 16, that's enough for her, lol). Our friends will be first name, but we'll teach her to call any other adult Mr or Mrs second name. If anyone asks to be called aunty we'll say no but she can call you miss first name or Mrs second name instead, which would you prefer? Hopefully that will work.

ETA: older cousins will still just be first name. Strangers I think we'll teach her not to call them anything and just say 'excuse me' if she wants to talk to them. I know DH sometimes calls male strangers sir, but I don't know what he does with women since not all women like Miss..

I prefer kids to call adults Mr. and Mrs. ____. It's just a respect thing, it's how my parents raised me so I plan to have my kids do the same. I haven't changed my name to my huband's name, but I don't really care whether they call me Mrs. mylastname or Mrs. hislastname. That's how my mom was, she kept her name but wasn't bothered if people referred to her by my dad's last name.

ETA: Obviously if other adults tell my kids to call them by their first names, that's perfectly fine, I'm just going to have them default to Mr. or Mrs. because I think it's more polite before you know what people prefer to be called!

It doesn't really matter to me, I am a teacher so used to "mrs" but if my kids friends call me by my first name it wouldn't bother me.

@Dandelion: haha I was so confused when I learned that my grandmother's Church friends were not really her sisters. I thought I had a large family, but nope they were pretend.

My kids will have 5 real aunts/ uncles as-is, so I am not sure if we will use aunt/uncle either.

I don't mind kids calling me by my first name. Sometimes their parents emphasize a Ms. firstname, but it doesn't make much difference to me. As far as my own kid, I'll let other adults introduce themselves to him how they prefer to be called. If they don't do that, they will probably end up with just a first name or ms. or mr. firstname.

I don't like to use Aunt/Uncle for anyone who isn't technically an aunt or uncle. I don't know why that bugs me...I guess I was just grown up that way.

I grew up with a host of aunts and uncles (family friends), neighbors were Dr. last name or Mr./ Ms. first name, and my classmates parents were Mr. /Ms. last name. Strangers were sir, Ms. or ma'am. Even my older cousins were Cousin first name.

My parents were called Mr./ Ms. last name by my friends, and my dad was called by his first name and my mom was always Ms. last name by my brother's friends. My mom would correct my brother's friends.

The first time I was referred to as "Aunt" I felt old, but then again that term best describe the type of relationship I have with the child's parents.

What will you teach your children to call adults?

Family-friends
Neighbors
Classmate or peer-age friends' parents
Older cousins (ex your age/ your first cousin)
Strangers (librarian, waitress, bus driver etc)

Edit: I left out a category Help (landscapers, housekeepers, nannies etc) Growing up we called the help by their first name. With my children I will use Mr. Ms. first name.

What will you be called? Will you dictate what children call you or let their parents set the tone?
